Chapter 1 - The Hospital Arrival and the Betrayal

The windshield wipers of Mrs. Burke’s modest sedan fought valiantly against the torrential downpour as we sped toward Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Every bump in the road sent a jolt of agonizing pain through my abdomen, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the icy clarity settling into my mind.

"Just breathe, honey, we're almost there," Mrs. Burke coaxed, her hands gripping the steering wheel tight. "That man is a fool. A blind, heartless fool."

"I know, Mrs. Burke," I managed to say, leaning my head against the cold window. "He has no idea what he just did."

When we arrived at the emergency entrance, the medical team took one look at my vitals and rushed me straight into a delivery suite. My blood pressure was spiking to dangerous levels. The head obstetrician, Dr. Aris Thorne, immediately recognized me from my confidential military medical file, though he maintained professional composure in front of Mrs. Burke.

"Colonel Vance," Dr. Thorne said quietly once the curtain was drawn, using my real rank in a low whisper. "Your blood pressure is dangerously high. We need to perform an emergency Cesarean section right now to protect both you and the baby."

"Do it, Doctor," I replied without hesitation. "Just make sure my daughter is safe."

Three hours later, amidst the sterile hum of the operating room, a sharp, beautiful cry pierced the air. At 2:14 AM, my daughter, Victoria Roderick Vance, came into the world. She was small, but her lungs were strong, and her dark, curious eyes mirrored my own.

As I lay in the recovery room, holding my newborn daughter wrapped in a soft pink blanket, the door to my private room suddenly jingled. I expected a nurse.

Instead, Kenneth strolled into the room. He was wearing a tailored suit, looking pristine and completely untouched by the rain or the gravity of what he had done. But he wasn't alone. Walking arm-in-arm beside him was a woman in her late twenties, wearing a flashy designer dress and a massive, sparkling diamond ring on her finger. It was Vanessa Sterling, the daughter of a prominent local real estate developer.

"Well, well, Sabrina," Kenneth sneered, leaning against the bed frame while Vanessa smirked beside him. "Look at you. Still lying around playing the victim."

"What are you doing here, Kenneth?" I asked, my voice calm, steady, and utterly devoid of fear as I held Victoria close to my chest.

"I came to make things officially clear so you don't get any absurd ideas about coming back to my house," Kenneth said smoothly, gesturing to Vanessa. "Vanessa and I are engaged. In fact, we’re getting married the moment our divorce goes through. I’ve already had the locks changed on the house."

Vanessa stepped forward, proudly thrusting her left hand toward my face so I could see the glittering ring. "Kenneth needed a real woman, Sabrina," she said arrogantly. "Someone with status, family connections, and actual wealth—not a low-level paper-pusher who brings nothing to the table. You were just dead weight holding his career back."

Kenneth chuckled, reaching down to stroke Vanessa’s shoulder. "I’ve won, Sabrina. You have no money, no home, and now a baby you can't afford. You lost."

Before I could even reply, a sudden, powerful double-knock rattled the door of the private suite.

The door swung open wide. Standing in the doorway was a tall, imposing figure in a crisp Army Service Uniform adorned with three glittering silver stars on each shoulder strap. It was Lieutenant General Arthur Pendelton, Deputy Chief of Staff of the United States Army, flanked by two armed Military Police officers in full dress uniform.

The entire room fell dead silent. Kenneth’s smug grin faltered as he recognized the high-ranking officer.

General Pendelton stepped smartly into the room, brought his hand up to his brow, and held a crisp, flawless military salute directly aimed at me.

"Good evening, Colonel Vance," General Pendelton declared, his deep voice echoing in the small room. "On behalf of the Joint Chiefs and the Pentagon, I congratulate you on the birth of your daughter. The President has officially signed your command orders. Your classified unit stands ready for your leadership."

Kenneth’s mouth dropped open. Vanessa shrank back, her eyes darting between the three-star general and me in utter confusion.

"C-Colonel?" Kenneth stammered, the color draining from his face like water down a drain. "Sabrina... what is he talking about?"

May you like

General Pendelton turned his sharp, icy gaze toward Kenneth and Vanessa, his brow furrowing with absolute disgust.

"Who are these civilians, Colonel Vance?" the General asked sternly. "And why are they disturbing an officer of your rank during recovery?"
