Chapter 9 - The Final Settlement

Six weeks after my birthday barbecue, Arthur Vance called me into his office for what he called "the final accounting."

My children were all sitting in the conference room. They looked like different people. Mark looked ten years older, his hands rough and unwashed. Allison wore no makeup, her hair tied back in a messy ponytail, her expensive designer bags nowhere to be seen. David sat in the corner, staring blankly at a legal pad.

"Thank you for coming, Natalie," Arthur said, opening a thick leather ledger. "As of this morning, Mark Brooks has officially declared corporate and personal bankruptcy. The state has dropped the criminal forgery charges in exchange for a full liquidation of his business assets to pay back the estate."

Mark didn't look up. He just stared at the table, his jaw clenched.

"Allison has signed a formal confession regarding the lake house fraud," Arthur continued. "She will receive three years of probation and must complete five hundred hours of community service. The lake house remains entirely under your name, Natalie."

"And David?" I asked.

"David's startup has been dissolved," Arthur said. "The remaining assets have been returned to the family trust. He is currently working as an entry-level technician for a local cable company."

The three of them sat in silence, waiting for me to say something. They expected me to gloat. They expected me to show a flash of the anger that had burned in the fire pit that Sunday afternoon.

Instead, I just looked at them with a profound, empty pity.

"You had everything," I said quietly, the words hanging in the air like heavy dust. "Your father and I didn't just build an estate. We built a family. We gave you love, education, and every opportunity to be good people. But you got greedy. You wanted the future before it belonged to you."

I stood up, smoothing my coat. "Arthur will handle the rest of your monthly allowances—which will be exactly zero dollars. Do not call me. Do not come to the house. As far as I'm concerned, the fire in the backyard finished what your greed started."
