Chapter 7 - The Baby's Confession

On Friday evening, a shadow fell over the kitchen window. I looked up from my book to see David standing on the porch. He looked thin, his clothes wrinkled, completely unlike the successful tech entrepreneur he pretended to be on social media.

I opened the door but didn't invite him in. I stood behind the screen.

"Mom," he whispered, his voice trembling. "Can I just... can I just talk to you for five minutes? Please."

I looked at him for a long moment. Of all of them, David’s betrayal hurt the most. He was the youngest. He had been the gentlest child.

"Five minutes, David," I said, stepping back to let him into the hallway.

He sat at the kitchen table, the same table where they had refused to let me light my birthday candles. He put his head in his hands and began to cry—real, heavy tears that shook his shoulders.

"I didn't want to do it, Mom," he sobbed. "Mark and Allison... they came to me three weeks ago. They told me that if I didn't sign the petition, they would expose my startup's financial leaks to my investors. I was drowning in debt, Mom. The company is a failure. Everything I built... it's a lie. I needed the trust money to keep the lights on."

I stood by the counter, my arms crossed. "So you decided to sacrifice me to save your vanity?"

"I was scared!" he yelled softly, looking up with red, bloodshot eyes. "They said you'd be fine! They said the senior living place was nice, that you’d have friends, that it was safer for you anyway! I didn't know Mark had forged Dad's signature. I swear I didn't know!"

"But you knew you were taking my home, David," I said, my voice heavy with thirty-eight years of memories. "You knew what this house meant to your father and me. And you stood there and watched them threaten me."

"I'm sorry," he whispered, pressing his forehead against the wood. "I'm so sorry, Mom."

"Sorry doesn't pay the lawyers, David," I said, walking to the front door and opening it wide. "Your five minutes are up."
