Chapter 5 - The Judge's Gavel

"Mr. Henderson," Judge Cho said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. "Have you actually read the evaluation your own clients requested?"

Henderson blinked, caught off guard. "Uh, Your Honor, Dr. Thorne’s office indicated the report was sent directly to the court clerk—"

"Then let me read it to you," Judge Cho interrupted, slamming the paper onto her desk. "Dr. Thorne states, and I quote, 'Natalie Brooks exhibits superior cognitive functioning, exceptional clarity, and a flawless memory. Her decision to destroy the documents in question was not an act of mania, but a rational response to ongoing financial exploitation by her adult children.'"

Allison gasped, her head snapping toward her brother. Mark stood up from his chair. "That's a lie! She paid him off!"

"Sit down, Mr. Brooks!" Judge Cho roared, pointing a finger at him. "You are in a court of law! Another outburst like that, and I will have the bailiff arrest you for contempt!"

Mark sank back into his seat, his face white.

"Furthermore," Judge Cho continued, looking at the documents Arthur had submitted. "This court is referring the financial records provided by the respondent to the State Prosecutor's Office. There are clear, actionable signs of forgery, corporate identity theft, and notary fraud committed by Mark and Allison Brooks."

The judge looked at me, her expression softening just a fraction. "The petition for conservatorship is denied with prejudice. Mrs. Brooks, you are free to manage your life and your property exactly as you see fit. This court is adjourned."

The gavel hit the sound block with a deafening CRACK.

As the room cleared, my children stood frozen in the hallway outside. They looked at me as I walked out, no longer seeing a frail old woman they could bully. They saw the woman who held the keys to their survival—and she had just changed the locks.
