Chapter 10 - The Quiet Birthday

The air in late October was crisp, carrying the scent of fallen maple leaves and woodsmoke from neighboring chimneys.

I sat on the redwood deck, wrapped in a thick wool blanket that Frank had bought me for our thirtieth anniversary. On the small iron table next to me sat a single, miniature chocolate cupcake with one white candle sticking out of the frosting.

The house behind me was quiet. No shouting. No demands. No greedy eyes looking at the furniture, calculating how much it would fetch at an estate auction.

I struck a match, the small flame flickering against the autumn breeze, and lit the candle.

I looked out at the yard. It was beautiful. The grass was green, the fences were sturdy, and the memory of Frank felt closer than it had in months. He wouldn't be angry with me for what I did to the children. Frank loved them, but he loved honor more. He would have thrown those papers into the fire himself if he had seen the way they treated me.

"Happy birthday to me," I whispered into the quiet afternoon.

May you like

I didn't make a wish for money. I didn't wish for their return. I just wished for peace.

I leaned forward and blew out the candle. The tiny wisp of white smoke drifted up into the clear blue sky, disappearing into the air, leaving nothing behind but the clean, sweet smell of a home that was entirely, beautifully, mine again.
