Chapter 6 - The Rebuilding

Two weeks after the eviction notice was served, the news of Montgomery Development’s takeover made the front page of every major financial publication:
“Global Conglomerate Vance International Acquires Distressed Montgomery Development in Spectacular Turnaround.”
Under Rachel’s leadership, Nathan was appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of the restructured entity, now renamed Vance-Montgomery Real Estate.
Nathan didn't use the position to flaunt wealth. Instead, he immediately reformed the company's labor practices, increased worker wages, and redirected the focus of the Westside Plaza project into an eco-friendly community hub with affordable housing units and a public arts center.
Meanwhile, Trevor Miller accepted a guilty plea for corporate fraud, receiving a three-year suspended sentence, four hundred hours of community service, and a permanent ban from working in the financial sector.
Unable to maintain her lavish lifestyle, Amanda filed for divorce from Trevor. She was forced to move into a tiny, rented studio apartment on the outskirts of the city, working as a junior retail clerk at a department store—the very same store where she used to spend thousands of dollars on designer handbags.
Diane and Harold Montgomery were forced to sell their luxury vehicles and private club memberships to clear their personal debts. They moved into a modest suburban townhouse—a far cry from their grand estate.
One afternoon, as Rachel was finishing a board meeting at Vance International headquarters, Secretary Park entered her executive office.
"Chairman Vance," Secretary Park said respectfully. "Mrs. Diane Montgomery is downstairs in the lobby. She does not have an appointment, but she has been waiting for three hours. She is begging for five minutes of your time."
Rachel looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the bustling city below.
"Let her up," Rachel said quietly.
Five minutes later, the heavy oak doors opened.
Diane walked in. Gone were the tailored silk dresses, the perfectly styled hair, and the arrogant, piercing glare. She looked ten years older, wearing a simple, off-the-rack coat, her hands trembling as she held her purse.
"Rachel..." Diane whispered, standing nervously near the entrance.
"Sit down, Diane," Rachel said, gesturing to the leather sofa.
Diane slowly sat down, staring around the breathtaking office that overlooked the entire skyline—a physical representation of the massive empire Rachel had built while living silently in a modest apartment.
"I... I came to apologize," Diane sobbed softly, tears trailing down her wrinkled cheeks. "I was wrong, Rachel. I was so wrong about everything. I judged you... I judged my own son... I destroyed my granddaughter's sweet gift..."
Rachel sat opposite her, listening quietly, her expression impassive.
"Harold is depressed," Diane continued, her voice trembling. "Amanda won't speak to us. Trevor is gone. Our friends... everyone we knew in society has turned their backs on us. We have nothing left."

"You had everything that mattered, Diane," Rachel said gently, yet firmly. "You had a loving son who wanted to share his life with you. You had a healthy, creative granddaughter who wanted to show you her art. But you traded all of it for status, designer labels, and the cruel pleasure of looking down on others."
"I know..." Diane wept, placing her face in her hands. "I know. I don't ask for the company back. I don't ask for the mansion. I just... I just want to see Nathan. I just want to tell Sophie that I'm sorry."
