Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

Desperation is a powerful poison.

Within forty-eight hours, the Montgomery family was spiraling into complete chaos. Trevor was officially summoned by the State Prosecutor's office for questioning regarding fraudulent invoices found on the Rogers account. Amanda’s high-society friends suddenly stopped answering her calls, and her membership at the elite Lakeside Country Club was quietly suspended pending her husband’s legal investigation.

In a desperate bid to save their empire, Harold and Diane decided to force Nathan to bring Rachel to a "reconciliation meeting" at the Montgomery estate.

They believed that if they put enough emotional pressure on Nathan, the obedient son would force his wife to step down and withdraw her financial attacks.

At 6:00 PM on Friday evening, a sleek black Maybach pulled up to the gates of the Montgomery mansion.

Two personal security guards in sharp suits stepped out first, opening the rear door. Rachel stepped out, wearing an immaculate ivory-white trousersuit, her hair styled in an elegant chignon, wearing an understated emerald necklace worth millions. Beside her stood Nathan, dressed in a sharp tailor-made suit, carrying Sophie’s small hand.

When they entered the living room, the atmosphere was drastically different from Christmas Eve.

There was no arrogant laughter. No condescending comments about "freelance consultants" or "cheap clothes."

Diane stood by the fireplace, her face thin and drawn. Harold sat behind his mahogany desk like a defeated general. Amanda and Trevor sat on the leather sofa, looking like condemned prisoners.

"Nathan... Rachel... please, sit down," Diane said, her voice shaking slightly as she tried to force a polite smile. "We... we brought out the good tea."

Rachel remained standing, her arms folded gracefully. "We aren't staying for tea, Diane. You asked for a meeting. Speak."

Harold cleared his throat, leaning forward. "Rachel... we admit there was a... misunderstanding on Christmas Eve. Tensions were high. Diane was stressed about the holiday preparations. She shouldn't have thrown Sophie's dress away."

"Misunderstanding?" Nathan sneered. "You called my daughter a beggar, Dad. You crushed her spirit because she wasn't wearing a designer label."

"It was an mistake!" Diane cried, tears brimming in her eyes. "I will buy Sophie a hundred designer dresses! I’ll take her to Paris! Just... please, Rachel, tell Vance International to stop! They froze our corporate accounts! Trevor’s entire life is ruined!"

Trevor suddenly dropped to his knees right in front of Rachel, grabbing at the hem of her trousers.

"Rachel! Chairman Vance! Please!" Trevor wept, his dignity completely gone. "I was stupid! I was arrogant! I only bragged because I wanted to impress Harold! Please don't send me to prison! I have a mortgage! I have lease payments!"

Rachel stepped back, her eyes cold as ice, looking down at Trevor as if he were a bug on her shoe.

"Get up, Trevor," Rachel said calmly. "You didn't care about mortgages when you laughed at my husband being unemployed. You didn't care about dignity when you called me a 'stupid woman' at the dinner table."

Amanda jumped up, her face twisted in rage. "You hypocrite! You lied to us for five years! You played the poor, humble housewife just to watch us stumble! You tricked my family!"

"I never lied to you, Amanda," Rachel stated cleanly, looking her sister-in-law straight in the eye. "I simply lived quietly. I never once bragged about my wealth. I never used my power to belittle anyone. You were the ones who judged my worth by the car I drove and the clothes my child wore. You revealed your own character. I merely let you face the consequences of it."
