Chapter 5 - The Masterstroke

Seeing that emotional manipulation was failing, Harold’s desperate arrogance flared up once more. He slammed his hand on the desk, standing up straight.
"Fine!" Harold shouted. "You have corporate power, Rachel! But you forget one thing—Nathan is a Montgomery! His name is tied to my firm! If Montgomery Development goes under, Nathan’s reputation in this city will be ruined too! I will publicly declare that my own son conspired with his wife to destroy his family's legacy!"
Nathan stepped forward, pulling a thick leather folder from his briefcase and tossing it onto Harold's desk.
"You don't need to worry about my reputation, Dad," Nathan said calmly. "Because as of 4:00 PM today, I have officially resigned as a beneficiary of the Montgomery Family Trust. I have severed all legal ties with your firm."
Harold’s eyes widened. "What?"
"And there's something else you should read," Nathan added, tapping the folder.
Harold frantically opened the folder. Inside were certified land deeds, corporate acquisition documents, and a public tender notice.
"While you were busy trying to leverage your fifty-million-dollar loan," Nathan explained, "Vance International acquired eighty-five percent of the distressed debt of Montgomery Development from your secondary creditors. Dad... my wife doesn't just hold your bank loan. She owns your entire company's debt."
Harold’s knees gave out. He fell heavily back into his leather chair, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
"You... you bought my debt?" Harold whispered.
"I am executing a formal debt-for-equity swap," Rachel announced with absolute authority. "Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, Vance International will assume complete operational control of Montgomery Development. You, Harold, are officially removed from the Board of Directors for severe mismanagement."
"No... no!" Diane screamed, clutching her head. "This is our house! This is our legacy!"
"This house was put up as collateral for your corporate credit line three years ago, Diane," Rachel reminded her smoothly. "Which means this mansion now belongs to the Vance Foundation."
Rachel turned to her security guards.
"Serve them the formal thirty-day notice of eviction," she ordered.
"Eviction?!" Amanda shrieked, backing into the wall. "You're kicking us out of our home?!"

"You told my daughter that cheap things belong in the trash," Rachel said, her voice ringing through the grand marble hall. "I am simply clearing out the property."
Without another word, Rachel took Nathan’s arm. Nathan picked up little Sophie, who was smiling peacefully, and together they turned their backs on the collapsing Montgomery family, walking out into the crisp, clear night.
