Chapter 2 - The Fall of the First Domino

The morning after Christmas was supposed to be a celebratory holiday for the executive team at Orion Global. Instead, it became an absolute bloodbath.

At 7:00 AM, Trevor Miller was awakened not by the sound of Christmas carols, but by the relentless ringing of his personal cell phone.

When he answered, the frantic voice of Orion Global’s Managing Director, Arthur Vance (no relation to the Chairman, but a loyal company veteran), roared into his ear:

"Trevor! What the hell did you do?!"

Trevor sat up in bed, sweat dripping down his neck. Beside him, Amanda was fast asleep, dreaming of her high-society status. "Arthur? What's going on? It's the day after Christmas—"

"You are fired, Trevor!" Arthur yelled. "Effective six minutes ago! Security has already cleared out your desk, your corporate access has been revoked, and federal auditors from Vance International Group just seized your office computer!"

Trevor’s heart hammered violently against his ribs. "Arthur, please! Is this about Rachel? She's crazy! She's my brother-in-law's jobless wife! She put on an act—"

"Are you an idiot?!" Arthur screamed through the line. "Rachel Vance isn't an actress! She is the founder, majority shareholder, and Executive Chairman of Vance International Group! She owns seventy percent of Orion Global! She literally bought our parent company three years ago in cash!"

The phone slipped from Trevor’s numb fingers, bouncing off the silk duvet.

Amanda stirred, rubbing her eyes. "Trevor? Who was that? Tell them to stop calling, it's early..."

"Amanda..." Trevor gasped, his voice barely a shadow. "She... she wasn't lying."

Meanwhile, in a sprawling penthouse overlooking the city skyline, Rachel sat in her sunlit study wearing a simple cashmere sweater. Sophie was happily sitting on the rug, drawing pictures with a brand-new set of professional art supplies that Nathan had bought her that morning.

Nathan walked in, placing a fresh cup of coffee on Rachel’s desk.

"Trevor just tried to call me six times," Nathan said, sitting in the armchair opposite her. "Amanda sent twenty frantic text messages."

"I know," Rachel said calmly, looking up from her laptop screen. "Secretary Park informed me that Trevor tried to enter the Orion Global building an hour ago. Security escorted him off the premises in handcuffs because he tried to delete his financial files."

Nathan looked down at his coffee, taking a slow sip. "Rachel... for five years, you kept all of this hidden. You let my mother make you wash dishes at family gatherings. You let Amanda give you her old, faded clothes as 'charity'. Why didn't you stop them sooner?"

Rachel reached across the desk and placed her hand over his.

"Because I loved you, Nathan," she said softly. "You told me how your family used money to control you your entire life. You wanted to build something with your own two hands, without anyone claiming you rode my coat-tails. I respected your dignity. But when your mother put our child's dignity in the trash compactor... my tolerance ended."

Nathan squeezed her hand, his eyes shining with deep emotion and fierce resolve. "They deserve everything that's coming to them. What's the next move?"

Rachel leaned back, a cold, elegant smile touching her lips.

"Your father’s real estate firm, Montgomery Development, has been seeking a fifty-million-dollar refinancing loan from First National Bank, correct?"

May you like

"Yes," Nathan nodded. "Dad’s been stressing over it for months. Without that loan, his new commercial project stalls out."

"First National Bank is a subsidiary of Vance Financial," Rachel said cleanly. "And their credit committee meets at 10:00 AM today."
