Chapter 8 - The Hammer Falls

Two weeks later, the sentencing hearing was held before Judge Rebecca Vance.

The courtroom was packed with journalists, legal observers, and members of the public who had followed the incredible story of survival and justice.

Judge Vance spent twenty minutes reviewing the evidence before addressing the defendants directly.

"Evelyn Vance and Chloe Vance," Judge Vance began, her voice ringing through the silent room like a tolling bell. "In my thirty years working in the criminal justice system, I have rarely witnessed such a complete abdication of basic human morality within a family unit. You did not merely commit a financial crime. You executed a calculated, sadistic act of cruelty against a helpless mother recovering from major surgery and an eleven-day-old infant—your own grandson and nephew."

The judge looked down at Evelyn over her glasses.

"You believed that because you were the matriarch of this family, you possessed absolute immunity. You believed you could exploit your son’s hard work, torture his wife, and treat an innocent baby as disposable collateral for your vanity. You were wrong."

Judge Vance delivered the sentences:

"Evelyn Vance: For Grand Larceny, Conspiracy, and Child Endangerment, you are sentenced to a term of eighteen to twenty-five years in a state correctional facility. Due to the severe nature of the bodily harm threatened upon the victims, parole eligibility is denied for the first twelve years."

Evelyn let out a choked groan, slipping sideways in her chair.

"Chloe Vance: You are sentenced to twelve to fifteen years in a state correctional facility."

"Mark Miller: Pursuant to your plea agreement and cooperation, you are sentenced to six years in a state correctional facility, followed by full financial restitution."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to lock the heavy iron restraints onto Evelyn and Chloe, David stood up from his seat in the gallery.

Evelyn looked at him through her tears, her voice a ragged whisper. "David... please... I’m your mother... don't let them take me away... I’ll die in there..."

David looked at her for three long seconds. There was no hatred in his eyes anymore, no anger, no regret. There was only absolute, final indifference.

"You died to me the moment you locked that door, Evelyn," David said quietly.

He turned his back on her, took Maya’s hand, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright spring sunshine.
