Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Empire

Over the next two months, the systematic collapse of everything Evelyn and Chloe had built took place with brutal, mathematical speed.

Without David’s financial backing, the dominoes fell one by one.

First came the Westchester townhouse. Because the deed was solely in David’s name—having been purchased by him five years earlier as a residence for his mother—David immediately put the property on the market. It sold within three weeks for 1.8 million dollars. The funds were placed directly into a blind irrevocable trust created exclusively for little Liam’s future education and medical care. Evelyn’s personal belongings were packed into basic cardboard boxes and placed in a commercial storage unit; the monthly fee was paid for three months out of courtesy, after which the contents would be auctioned off if unpaid.

Next came Chloe’s lifestyle. The luxury Audi she drove was repossessed by the dealership after two missed payments. Her credit cards, all linked to David’s master business account, were officially closed, leaving her with a ruined credit score of under 400.

Mark’s midtown accounting firm suffered an even worse fate. Following an emergency petition filed by Victoria Sterling on David’s behalf, the Internal Revenue Service and the New York State Attorney’s Office opened an official investigation into Mark’s financial records. They discovered that Mark had been using the firm’s accounts to launder funds, evade taxes, and pad his personal income using David’s investment capital. Within thirty days, Mark’s professional accounting license was revoked, his firm was closed down by federal authorities, and additional federal tax evasion charges were added to his existing indictment.

In late February, David visited Mark in the attorney-client visitation room at Rikers Island, accompanied by Victoria.

Mark sat across the thick glass partition, looking hollowed out, having lost twenty pounds in prison.

"David..." Mark choked out, picking up the heavy black receiver. "Please... talk to the prosecutor. I’ll plead guilty to everything! I’ll testify against Evelyn and Chloe! Just get me out of here... I can't survive in this place."

David picked up his receiver, his voice calm and unhurried. "You sat in my kitchen, Mark. You packed my son’s formula into a duffel bag while my wife begged you for help. You watched Chloe laugh at her."

"They made me do it!" Mark pleaded, tears streaming down his face. "Evelyn runs everything! She threatened to make Chloe divorce me if I didn't go along with it! I didn't want to hurt Maya!"

"You had a choice, Mark," David said. "You chose a luxury vacation over an infant’s life. Now you have to live with the consequences of your choice."

"What do you want from me?" Mark sobbed.

"A full, unedited guilty plea," David stated. "You testify on record regarding every single detail of how Evelyn planned the theft, how she instructed you to lock the apartment, and how she intended to use the money. You give the prosecution everything, and maybe the judge gives you eight years instead of fifteen."

Mark wiped his nose with his orange sleeve, nodding frantically. "I’ll do it. I’ll sign whatever you want."

David hung up the phone, stood up, and walked out without looking back.
