Chapter 5 - The Extradition

Five days later, the extradition process was completed. Bound in wrist chains and leg irons, Evelyn, Chloe, and Mark were flown back to New York under state police escort and processed at the Manhattan Detention Complex, universally known as the Tombs.

Because David had frozen all personal and joint accounts associated with them, their high-priced Manhattan defense attorneys immediately withdrew from the case due to non-payment.

On the morning of January 8th, the preliminary bail review hearing took place at the New York Supreme Court building in Lower Manhattan.

David sat in the front row of the gallery, impeccably dressed in a dark suit. Beside him sat Maya, wearing an elegant wool coat, her face restored to a healthy color, her arm resting securely inside David’s. Liam was home in their new, highly secure apartment on the Upper East Side under the care of a certified pediatric private nurse.

The side door opened, and the three defendants were brought in by armed court officers.

Evelyn looked unrecognizable. Her styled hair was messy and unwashed, her face was gaunt, and she wore a drab orange inmate jumpsuit. Chloe was weeping silently, her hands trembling in her cuffs, while Mark stared blankly at the floor, ruined and terrified.

As Evelyn passed the gallery, her eyes caught David and Maya.

A sudden surge of frantic hope flared in Evelyn’s eyes. "David!" she cried out, trying to step toward the wooden railing before a officer grabbed her shoulder. "David, baby, look at me! Tell them to take these off me! It’s your mother! I made a mistake, David! That girl manipulated everything! Tell the judge you want to drop the charges!"

David didn't move a single muscle. He looked at his mother with the exact same cold, unblinking expression he used when inspecting defective machinery in a factory.

The presiding judge, Honorable Rebecca Vance (no relation), slammed her gavel down with sharp authority. "Silence in the courtroom! Defendant Evelyn Vance, sit down immediately or you will be held in contempt!"

Evelyn was forced into her chair at the defense table, where a court-appointed public defender sat looking utterly overwhelmed by the mountain of digital evidence piled before him.

The Assistant District Attorney, Sarah Jenkins, stood up to address the court.

"Your Honor," Jenkins declared, holding up a heavy binder. "The State requests that all three defendants be held without bail pending trial. The evidence against them includes forty-eight hours of continuous high-definition video footage, financial records detailing over one hundred and twenty thousand dollars in stolen funds, and medical records from Mount Sinai Hospital confirming that the victim, Maya Vance, was admitted with life-threatening sepsis directly resulting from the intentional withholding of prescribed care."

The public defender stood up weakly. "Your Honor... my clients have no prior criminal records. Mrs. Evelyn Vance is an elderly woman with deep roots in the community—"

"Your client left an infant with a specialized dietary condition without food while locking a post-surgical mother inside an unheated apartment during a winter freeze," Judge Reynolds interrupted coldly. "She then used the victim's husband’s funds to fly to Florida on a luxury vacation. That does not demonstrate 'community roots,' counsel. That demonstrates an extraordinary degree of depravity and a total lack of human empathy."

Judge Reynolds signed the order without hesitation.

"Bail is denied. The defendants will remain in custody at Rikers Island pending trial."

Chloe burst into loud, hysterical wails, dropping her head onto the table. "Rikers?! Mom, you said he wouldn't let them send us to Rikers!"

Evelyn turned her head toward David, her face twisting into a mask of pure, demonic rage. "You bad son!" she shrieked as the guards pulled her toward the exit. "You traded your own blood for that worthless orphan! You will rot in hell for this, David! I curse the day I gave birth to you!"

David didn't reply. He simply reached over, wrapped his arm around Maya’s shoulders, and kissed her hair as the doors slammed shut behind his family forever.
