Chapter 3 - The Frozen Kingdom

By 8:00 AM on New Year’s Day, the news had begun to spread through the Vance family’s extended social and professional circles like wildfire.

David didn't sleep. He spent the early hours of the morning sitting beside Maya’s bed, holding her hand while she slept peacefully under the influence of proper pain management and intravenous medication. Liam was sleeping soundly nearby, his vitals stable, his small body finally warm and nourished.

Victoria Sterling, one of New York’s top criminal prosecution and family law attorneys—and a trusted friend of David’s former university mentor—entered the private hospital room carrying a thick leather briefcase.

"David," Victoria said quietly, stepping inside. "The Miami-Dade Police Department has confirmed that all three suspects are in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Bail was formally denied during their emergency tele-arraignment an hour ago, thanks to the severity of the charges and the flight risk demonstrated by their vacation."

David looked up, his eyes bloodshot but unyielding. "What about the stolen assets?"

Victoria pulled a series of financial documents from her briefcase. "The police searched their penthouse suite and their luxury rental vehicles under a search warrant. They recovered your father’s gold watch, thirty thousand dollars in unspent cash, Maya’s stolen jewelry, and several high-end luxury items bought with your cards. Everything has been seized as evidence."

"Good," David said softly. "Now let's talk about the rest of the family."

"What do you mean?" Victoria asked, settling into a chair opposite him.

"My mother didn't work a day in her life after my father died seven years ago," David explained, his voice low and measured. "I paid the mortgage on her townhouse in Westchester. I paid the lease on Chloe’s Audi. I paid for Mark’s accounting firm’s office space in Midtown because he claimed he was 'getting on his feet.' I owned forty percent of that firm as a silent partner."

Victoria’s eyes gleamed with professional appreciation. "You hold all the financial leverage."

"I want every single account frozen, every lease terminated, and every transfer revoked," David said. "I am cutting off every dollar that bears my name. If they want legal representation, they can use public defenders or sell their own clothes."

"I’ll file the emergency injunctions with the court by noon," Victoria agreed instantly. "By the end of the day, your mother’s house will be in foreclosure proceedings, Chloe’s car will be scheduled for repossession, and Mark’s firm will face an immediate audit for tax fraud based on the business credit cards he misused."

At that moment, Maya stirred on the bed. Her eyes slowly opened, the deep shadows beneath them looking slightly less severe than the night before. She saw David sitting beside her, his hand wrapped around hers, and tears immediately filled her eyes.

"David..." she whispered, her voice frail. "Is Liam okay?"

David leaned over, gently kissing her forehead. "Liam is perfect, sweetheart. He’s warm, he’s fed, and he’s safe. And so are you."

"Your mother... Chloe..." Maya stammered, panic rising in her chest. "They're going to be so angry with me... they said if I complained—"

May you like

"Maya, listen to me," David interrupted gently, looking directly into her eyes with absolute conviction. "They will never touch you again. They will never speak to you again. Right now, they are sitting in a jail cell in Miami, and they are going to prison for a very long time."

Maya stared at him in disbelief, a slow tear rolling down her pale cheek. For the first time in three years, the crushing weight of terror that had haunted her life with David’s family began to dissolve.
