Chapter 8 - The Shadow Trader Falls

The federal trial of The State v. Ethan Ethan et al. was the most heavily guarded legal proceeding in the modern history of Jiang City. The gallery was packed with international journalists, regulatory officials, and the remaining executives of the shipping industry who were eager to see the final nail driven into the coffin of the Ethan family.

Ethan sat at the defense table, his eyes sunken, his skin a sallow, unhealthy yellow. He looked like a man who had already spent a lifetime in the dark. Beside him, his brother and his mother sat in identical silent terror.

On the third day of testimony, the heavy mahogany doors at the back of the courtroom opened.

The entire gallery turned to look, expecting to see the famous titanium wheelchair of the Shengheng Network’s matriarch.

Instead, a collective, deafening gasp echoed through the vaulted room.

Sophia walked in.

She didn't have a wheelchair, and she didn't have a cane. She walked with a slow, deliberate, and incredibly regal stride, her feet dressed in simple, elegant black heels, her posture flawless. Her left hand rested lightly on the forearm of Leo, who walked beside her like a silent protector, but the weight of her steps belonged entirely to her.

Ethan stood up from his chair, his knees knocking against the modesty panel of the defense table, his mouth opening in an ugly, silent scream of absolute disbelief. "No... no... you're... you're a cripple... they said you could never walk..."

Sophia stopped a few feet from the defense table, looking down at him from her full, impressive height. Her emerald eyes held no anger, no hatred, only the cold, unyielding finality of a judge who had already written the verdict.

"The doctors you paid told you I couldn't walk, Ethan," Sophia said, her voice echoing clearly in the silent courtroom. "But you forgot to pay the network that tracks the truth. And the truth has a habit of standing up."

The prosecution’s lead attorney stepped forward, handing a final, massive stack of documents to the bailiff. "Your Honor, we submit the verified bank transcripts from the Swiss accounts used by the respondents to fund the modification of the vehicle belonging to the late Mr. and Mrs. Reed. The signature matching the authorization code belongs directly to Ethan Ethan."

The judge, a stern man with thirty years on the federal bench, reviewed the files for exactly two minutes before looking down at the defense table with an expression of profound disgust.

"In the matter of conspiracy to commit premeditated murder, grand corporate larceny, and state customs fraud," the judge announced, his voice booming through the room, "this court finds the defendants guilty on all counts. Ethan Ethan, you are sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served in the maximum-security facility at Black River. Your family’s remaining assets are hereby forfeited to the Shengheng Restoration Fund."

The gavel struck the wood with a sound like a thunderclap.

Ethan collapsed into his chair, his hands flying to his face as he began to weep hysterically, the sound of his pathetic sobs drowned out by the sudden, triumphant applause of the gallery. Sophia didn't stay to watch them drag him away. She turned on her heel, her black dress swirling around her ankles, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright, clean sunlight of the plaza, her steps firm, unbroken, and entirely free.
