Chapter 4 - The Sinking Fleet

By 3:00 PM, the storm outside Jiang City had intensified, turning the sky a deep, bruised purple. Inside the executive offices of the Ethan Group, the atmosphere was even more apocalyptic. The main trading floor was a sea of red lights and sirens as the automated logistical software completely locked up.

"Sir! We have a crisis!" the chief of operations shouted, bursting into Ethan’s private office without knocking. He was sweating through his white shirt, his glasses sliding down his nose. "The entire automated fleet in the East Sea has stopped moving. The transponders are showing a localized software override. Six of our largest container ships are currently drifting five miles outside the harbor gates, and the port authority is refusing to let them dock!"

Ethan, who was pacing behind his desk with a glass of scotch in his hand, slammed the crystal tumbler against the glass tabletop. "What do you mean they won't let them dock? Call Director Vance! Tell him to clear the override manually!"

"We tried, sir!" the manager sobbed. "Director Vance was escorted out of his office by the state internal affairs bureau twenty minutes ago. They’re doing a full audit of his clearance tokens. And that's not all... the stock price just dropped twelve percent in the last ten minutes. Someone is shorting our shares on the open market, dumping millions of units at a fraction of their value!"

Ethan’s phone rang. The caller ID showed a number he had never seen before—a secure encryption string from an offshore satellite.

He answered it, his hand shaking. "Who is this?"

"Ethan," Sophia’s voice came through, clear and entirely unbothered by the chaos he could hear through his office windows. "Are you enjoying the cold dinner? I believe that’s what Chloe called it last night."

"Sophia!" Ethan screamed, his corporate mask completely slipping away, revealing the terrified, small-minded crook underneath. "Stop this right now! You’re destroying the company! If the Ethan Group goes under, you won't get a single dime in the divorce settlement anyway! We’ll both be broke!"

"Broke?" Sophia let out a low, aristocratic laugh that made Ethan’s skin crawl. "Ethan, you still don't understand the scale of the world you tried to play in. The Ethan Group is just a regional freight company. My family's network owns the actual infrastructure you use to breathe. I don't want your money. I don't want your shares. I’m shorting your stock because I want to buy your entire corporate debt from the bank for pennies on the dollar."

"You can't do that..."

"I already did," Sophia said. "Ten minutes ago, the Shengheng Capital Fund—my private asset firm—purchased the primary mortgage on your corporate headquarters and the lines of credit for your entire fleet from the Industrial Bank of Jiang City. As of this exact second, Ethan, you don't own a company. You own a mountain of debt, and your landlord is standing at your door."

The glass doors of Ethan's private office slid open. Four federal agents in windbreakers stepped inside, accompanied by Leo, who was holding a sleek silver laptop.

"Ethan Ethan?" the lead agent asked, pulling a leather badge wallet from his pocket. "You're under arrest for conspiracy to commit customs fraud, money laundering, and the illegal transfer of restricted technology through shell corporations. Step away from the desk and put your hands behind your back."

Ethan looked at the phone in his hand, his eyes wide with a sudden, suffocating realization. "Sophia... please... we're family..."

"We were never family, Ethan," Sophia’s voice whispered from the speaker before the line went dead. "You were just a temporary glitch in my system. And the cleanup is officially finished."
