Chapter 8 - The Heist of the Apex

Midnight.

Rain mixed with sleet poured over the industrial district of South Boston.

Outside the Apex Security Warehouse, a plain silver delivery van sat parked in a dark alleyway.

Inside the van, Gabriel adjusted the tactical earpiece fitted into Nora’s ear. She was dressed in a sleek, dark navy custodial jumpsuit, her hair tucked under a dark cap, holding a digital keycard clutched in her gloved hand.

"Are you sure about this?" Gabriel asked, his grey eyes filled with acute anxiety. "If Vance’s men spot you—"

"They won't," Nora reassured him, checking her utility belt. "Night-shift custodial crews use the basement service tunnel. The guards at the front desk don't even look at the cleaners' faces. I'll be in and out in fifteen minutes."

Gabriel reached out, cupping her cheek, pulling her into a fierce, intense kiss that took her breath away.

"I'll be monitoring your feed on the headset," Gabriel whispered against her lips. "If anything goes wrong, I bring the entire tactical team through the front wall."

"Understood," Nora smiled, stepping out into the freezing rain.

She moved smoothly through the shadows, tapping her old master keycard at the rear service entrance. The green light chimed softly, and the heavy metal door clicked open.

Inside, the warehouse smelled of ozone, floor wax, and cold steel.

Nora picked up a cleaning cart, rolling it down the quiet corridors, seamlessly blending into the routine she had performed for years. She reached the third-floor server vault, bypassing two sleeping guards by slipping through the maintenance ventilation shaft she used to clean.

Inside the server room, glowing blue lights illuminated rows of humming mainframe towers.

Nora pulled a high-speed decryption device given to her by Leo, plugging it directly into the master terminal.

A progress bar flashed across the screen: DECRYPTION 45%... 70%... 90%... COMPLETE.

She snatched the silver hard drive from the console, slipping it into her tactical vest.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the server room slammed shut.

CLICK.

The overhead fluorescent lights flickered off, replaced by flashing red emergency beacons.

WARNING. SECURITY BREACH IN SECTOR THREE.

Isabella Vance stepped out from the shadows behind a mainframe tower, holding a silenced chrome pistol, a cruel smirk on her lips.

"Hello, little maid," Isabella purred, aiming the gun directly at Nora’s chest. "Did you really think my father wouldn't leave a trap on his most valuable asset?"
