Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary in the Storm

The rain slammed against the reinforced glass of the black SUV as it glided silently through the dark, neon-lit streets of Boston.
Inside the rear cabin, the heater hummed softly, filling the leather-scented air with a comforting warmth. Nora sat huddled against the door, clutching Gabriel’s heavy woolen overcoat around her shivering frame. It smelled faintly of cedarwood, rain, and expensive tobacco—a masculine, grounding scent that anchored her against the absolute terror clawing at her throat.
Across from her sat Gabriel Costa.
He had removed his suit jacket, rolling his crisp white shirt sleeves up to his forearms, revealing dark, intricate tattoos of spiraling vines and ancient Latin text wrapping around his sun-bronzed skin. He held a crystal tumbler of amber scotch, his gray eyes fixed on Nora with an unreadable, intense stillness.
Beside him, his right-hand man and driver, Leo, watched the rearview mirror with hawkish focus.
"Drink," Gabriel said quietly, pointing toward a small velvet flask resting in the side door compartment. "It will stop the shaking."
Nora’s hands trembled so violently she could barely unscrew the silver cap. She took a tiny sip. The fiery liquid burned down her throat, settling like a hot ember in her stomach.
"Why?" Nora whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the engine.
Gabriel raised an eyebrow, taking a slow sip of his whiskey. "Why what?"
"Why did you tell her I was your wife?" Nora asked, looking down at her soaked canvas shoes. "You paid her debt. You could have taken me as a maid... or... or a hostage. Why claim me like that?"
Gabriel set his glass down in the polished wood cupholder.
"In my world, Nora, a maid can be snatched from an alley," Gabriel explained softly, his tone smooth and sharp as blown glass. "A hostage can be traded or killed by rivals to make a point. But a wife..."
He leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees, his gray eyes pinning her to her seat.
"...a wife carries the entire weight of the Costa Syndicate behind her name. To lay a finger on Gabriel Costa’s wife is an automatic death sentence. I gave you a shield, little mouse."
Little mouse.
The nickname sent a strange shiver down her spine. It wasn't spoken with cruelty, but with a quiet, observational curiosity.
"I have nothing," Nora whispered, tears finally breaking past her long eyelashes and trailing down her pale cheeks. "Diane took everything. My father’s watch, my mother’s jewelry, my money. I don't have a dowry. I don't have power."
"I don't need your money, Nora," Gabriel said, reaching out a long, warm finger to gently catch a stray tear on her cheek. His touch was shockingly soft for a man whose hands ordered executions. "I have enough money to buy this city three times over. What I need is someone who understands what it means to survive."
The SUV slowed down, turning onto a winding cobblestone driveway flanked by high wrought-iron gates and heavy guard towers.
As the trees cleared, the estate came into view.
Villa Costa.
It was a sprawling, three-story stone fortress overlooking the dark waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Floodlights illuminated marble pillars, manicured gardens, and dozens of armed guards patrolling the perimeter with tactical rifles.
The SUV stopped beneath the grand stone archway of the main entrance.
Leo opened the door, holding an umbrella over Gabriel as he stepped out. Gabriel turned back, holding out a large, firm hand toward Nora.

"Welcome home, Mrs. Costa," Gabriel said softly. "Your old life ended in that alley. Here, no one will ever make you beg again."
Nora looked at his hand, took a deep breath, and placed her cold fingers into his warm, unshakeable grip.
