Chapter 8 - Reclaiming the Past

The annual Vance Global Philanthropic Gala was the most coveted ticket in New York society. Held in the breathtaking glass atrium of the American Museum of Natural History, the event brought together heads of state, industry leaders, and international humanitarians.
Four years ago, at this very gala, Flynn had taken the stage alone, delivering a grand speech while keeping me in the background as his dutiful, silent wife.
Tonight, the world was different.
I stepped out of the black town car onto the red carpet wearing a breathtaking custom emerald green velvet gown, my hair cascading in soft waves over my shoulders. Standing by my side, dashing in a classic black tuxedo, was Julian. He held my hand firmly, offering a steady, comforting warmth that Flynn had never provided.
The flashbulbs of hundreds of photographers exploded like a galaxy of stars as we walked up the steps. Reporters shouted questions from behind the velvet ropes:
"Madam Chairwoman! How does it feel to achieve record earnings in your first two quarters?"
"Ms. Vance! Is it true the Victoria Fund has already pledged fifty million dollars to children's hospitals worldwide?"
"Julian! Are the rumors of an upcoming engagement true?"
Julian glanced at me, a soft, handsome smile playing on his lips, but we simply smiled at the cameras and walked into the grand ballroom without answering the gossip. We didn't need to feed the media; our work spoke for itself.
Inside the atrium, the atmosphere was electric. The very board members who had once bowed to Flynn’s arrogant demands now approached me with genuine deference and respect. Mr. Harrison came over, holding a glass of champagne, his expression full of sincere pride.
"Mabel," Mr. Harrison said, clinking his glass against mine. "I must confess... four years ago, when Flynn brought you into the firm, I thought you were just a brilliant attorney helping her husband build his name. I was an old fool. You weren't helping him build his name. You were carrying him on your shoulders."
"Thank you, Mr. Harrison," I replied gracefully. "Sometimes, people mistake the person carrying the foundation for part of the floor. I just decided to stand up."
"And the company has never been stronger for it," he said warmly, nodding respectfully to Julian before heading toward the main stage.
Julian turned to me, his dark eyes filled with tenderness. "He’s right, you know. You rebuilt an entire empire from the ashes of a betrayal that would have broken ninety-nine percent of people."
"It didn't break me because I wasn't fighting for pride, Julian," I said softly, looking across the room at a large digital screen displaying a photo of baby Victoria sleeping peacefully. "I was fighting for her. A mother protecting her child's future is the most dangerous force on earth."
"And what about your future, Mabel?" Julian whispered softly, taking a step closer, his voice dropping into an intimate tone that made my heart flutter in a way I hadn't felt in years. "Is there room in that future for someone who wants to protect you?"
Before I could answer, the master of ceremonies announced my name over the loudspeakers, inviting the Chairwoman of Vance Global to take the stage.

I looked at Julian, seeing the absolute sincerity and devotion burning in his eyes—a love that demanded nothing, controlled nothing, but offered everything.
"Ask me that again after my speech," I smiled, touching his cheek gently before turning toward the stage.
