Chapter 2 - The Confrontation

I wasn't in the hospital bed. I wasn't weeping into a pillow, nor was I looking like a defeated, abandoned postpartum mother drowning in grief.
I was sitting upright in a plush leather armchair near the window, sipping black coffee from a porcelain cup. My makeup was immaculate, my posture was rigid and regal, and standing behind my chair were four men in immaculate dark charcoal suits. Among them was Phoebe, holding a leather briefcase, flanked by two uniformed court officers and the chief compliance officer of Vance Global Enterprises.
"What... what is the meaning of this?" Flynn stammered, taking a step back as his eyes darted around the room. "Mabel? Why are you dressed like that? You gave birth yesterday! What are these people doing in your private suite?"
"Good morning, Flynn," I said smoothly, setting my coffee cup down onto the saucer with a crisp, deliberate clink. "You look rested. Did Selina sleep well in the Manhattan penthouse you bought her with corporate reserve funds?"
Flynn’s face drained of color, turning a sickly shade of ash gray. "How... how do you—"
"Did you really think I wouldn't check the ledger, Flynn?" I asked, leaning back and crossing my legs gracefully. "You walked into this room last night during my thirty-seventh contraction, brought your pregnant mistress into a sterile labor environment, and informed me that my child was being excised from the family trust because she lacked the proper anatomy to satisfy your archaic ego."
"Mabel, be reasonable!" Flynn snapped, quickly trying to regain his dominant posture as he stepped fully into the room, setting the soup container down on a side table with force. "It’s business! The Vance family dynasty requires a male successor to appease the board and maintain stability in the Asian markets! Selina gave me a son. It’s a matter of corporate legacy! I told you I would compensate you handsomely. I’m prepared to write you a check for twenty million dollars and give you the Hamptons estate! You don't need to make a public scene out of a standard restructuring!"
"Restructuring?" Phoebe stepped forward, pulling a thick stack of court-stamped documents from her briefcase with a cold, terrifying smile. "Mr. Vance, as of 4:00 AM today, the Supreme Court of the State of New York issued an emergency order validating Clause 14-B of the Vance Family Trust Agreement."
Flynn frowned, his eyes narrowing in confusion. "Clause 14-B? What the hell are you talking about? I’m the Chief Executive Officer of Vance Global! That trust belongs to my bloodline!"
"Correction," I said, rising from my chair with calm, unhurried authority. "The trust was established using my family's foundational assets and legal architecture. Under Clause 14-B, the appointment of beneficiaries is subject exclusively to the approval of the Sole Managing Trustee. That isn't you, Flynn. It has never been you. I am the sole trustee."
Flynn stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish caught out of water. "That’s impossible... I signed those documents with our family lawyers!"
"Your family lawyers were junior associates who couldn't parse a cross-collateralization clause if their lives depended on it," I said coldly, walking over to Victoria's crib and looking down at her sleeping face. "You signed what I put in front of you four years ago because you were too arrogant to read the fine print. You thought a woman who loved you would never build a cage around you. You mistook my devotion for weakness."
Phoebe handed a thick folder directly to Flynn. "Effective immediately, Mr. Vance: All personal accounts associated with your name have been frozen. Your executive privileges at Vance Global Enterprises have been temporarily suspended pending a full forensic audit by the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding the illegal diversion of eleven million dollars to Cayman shell company 'Aegis Asset Management'—the entity you used to purchase Selina’s property and pay off her family."
"You... you froze my accounts?" Flynn’s voice cracked, dropping an octave as panic finally broke through his polished exterior. "Mabel, you can't do this! I have a major board meeting at ten o'clock today to sign the acquisition of the Apex Tech Group! If my corporate cards are declined, if my authority is questioned, the stock will plummet!"
"Then I suggest you run to that meeting on foot, Flynn," I said quietly, turning my gaze to meet his horrified eyes. "Because as of ten minutes ago, the corporate car service attached to your executive profile has been canceled. Your security clearance to the top three floors of the headquarters has been revoked. And these officers..." I gestured toward the two court deputies, "...are here to serve you with an emergency restraining order. You are not permitted within five hundred yards of me, or my daughter, Victoria."
May you like
"Victoria?" Flynn whispered, his hands trembling as he held the legal documents. "You named her... Victoria?"
"Because she has already won," I replied flatly. "Get out of my room."
