Chapter 5 - The Desperate Entreaty

By nightfall, the news of Flynn Vance’s dramatic downfall had dominated every major financial publication in New York. The Wall Street Journal ran the headline: "Vance Global CEO Ousted in Dramatic Boardroom Coup Led by Sole Managing Trustee Mabel Vance."

Inside my recovery suite at the hospital, the room was quiet and peaceful. Soft jazz played from a Bluetooth speaker, and the fragrance of fresh-cut white lilies filled the air. I sat on the plush sofa, cradling Victoria in my arms as she quietly nursed.

A soft knock sounded at the door. Phoebe entered, holding two glasses and a bottle of sparkling apple cider to celebrate.

"The eviction was executed flawlessly," Phoebe reported with a satisfied smile, pouring the cider. "Selina Chen cleared out of the Upper East Side penthouse at four o'clock with two suitcases and her kid. Word on the street is she’s already packed up and moved back into her parents' modest suburban house in New Jersey. She blocked Flynn’s number an hour ago."

I took a sip of the chilled cider, a faint, sharp smile touching my lips. "Transaction-based loyalty never survives a market crash. Selina didn't love Flynn; she loved the lifestyle he stole from me to buy her. The moment the pipeline shut off, the illusion vanished."

"And Flynn?" Phoebe asked, sitting across from me. "He’s been pacing back and forth in the hospital lobby down on the ground floor for three hours. The security guards won't let him up because of the emergency restraining order, but he’s begging to see you. He looks like a ghost, Mabel."

I looked down at Victoria, who had fallen asleep peacefully against my chest. "Let him up. But only him. Tell security to sweep him for recording devices first."

Five minutes later, the door to the suite slid open.

Flynn walked in, but he was no longer the arrogant, flawless CEO who had stomped into my labor room twenty-four hours ago in a bespoke suit. His jacket was missing, his dress shirt was wrinkled and unbuttoned at the collar, his hair was disheveled, and deep shadow encircled his eyes. He looked ten years older.

He stood near the door, trembling, looking at me with a mix of terror, desperation, and total brokenness.

"Mabel..." he whispered, his voice hoarse and cracking. "Please... please just listen to me for five minutes."

"You have three," I said coldly, not moving an inch from my comfortable position on the sofa.

Flynn took a hesitant step forward, stopping when he saw the cold warning glare from the private security guard standing in the corner of the room.

"Mabel... I made a mistake. A horrific, unforgivable mistake," Flynn sobbed, tears spilling down his pale cheeks as he sank to his knees right on the hardwood floor. "I was blind! I was manipulated by Selina! She used me, Mabel! She tricked me into thinking I needed a male heir to secure the legacy!"

"Selina didn't force you to walk into my delivery room when I was ten centimeters dilated, Flynn," I said, my voice cutting through his pathetic weeping like a frozen blade. "Selina didn't tell me my daughter was worthless. You did that. All by yourself."

"I was out of my mind!" Flynn begged, dragging himself forward on his knees, his hands clasped together in supplication. "I love you, Mabel! I’ve always loved you! We built this life together! You can't destroy everything we worked for over a temporary lapse in judgment! I’ll disown Selina! I’ll never see her or that child again! I’ll give you total control over everything, just please... unfreeze my accounts! Restate me as CEO! Don't ruin my life!"

I looked down at him kneeling at my feet—the powerful, arrogant patriarch reduced to a pathetic beggar pleading for scraps from the very woman he had sought to destroy.

"You still don't understand, do you, Flynn?" I whispered, leaning forward slightly. "You think this is about money. You think this is about corporate control."

Flynn blinked through his tears, confused. "Isn't... isn't it?"

"It’s about respect," I said softly. "It’s about the fact that when I was risking my life to bring your child into this world, you looked at me not as your wife, but as a piece of trash to be discarded. You thought because I was vulnerable, because I was in pain, you held all the cards. You forgot who held the pen that wrote your entire life."

I stood up slowly, holding Victoria close to my heart.

"Your three minutes are up, Flynn. My lawyers will handle all further communication regarding our divorce. You will receive a standard statutory allowance from the trust—enough to rent a modest two-bedroom apartment and pay for basic living expenses—until the criminal investigation by the SEC concludes. You will not be CEO. You will not hold power. And you will never touch my daughter again."

May you like

"Mabel! No! Please!" Flynn shrieked as the security guards stepped forward, grabbing him by his arms and lifting him effortlessly off the floor. "Mabel! You can't do this to me! I am Flynn Vance! I am a Vance!"

"No," I said, turning my back to him as they dragged him out the door. "You were a Vance. Now, you’re just a caution story."
