Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

The financial sector of New York operates on blood and momentum. By 9:30 AM, news of the emergency asset freeze within the Vance trust had begun to leak into the upper echelons of Wall Street like ink in a bucket of milk.

Flynn arrived at the Vance Global Headquarters on 5th Avenue in a frantic sweat, having been forced to flag down a street taxi because his private driver refused to open the door of his Maybach—the vehicle’s lease was registered under a trust subsidiary that had been flagged for immediate repossession.

As Flynn burst through the glass doors of the executive lobby, his stride urgent and disheveled, his keycard failed at the turnstiles. The red light buzzed, a harsh, grating sound that drew the eyes of dozens of employees milling in the lobby.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Flynn roared at the chief of security. "Clear my badge immediately! I am the CEO of this company!"

"Mr. Vance," the security manager said nervously, avoiding eye contact. "We received an automated directive from the Managing Trustee’s office at seven this morning. Executive access for your level has been suspended pending the emergency board governance session."

"Governance session? What governance session?!"

"The one occurring right now in Boardroom A, sir," the guard whispered.

Upstairs on the 50th floor, the atmosphere inside Boardroom A was suffocatingly tense. The fifteen members of the board of directors—men and women who controlled billions in institutional capital—sat around the massive mahogany table.

At the head of the table sat not Flynn, but me.

I wore a crisp black tailored suit, my dark hair styled impeccably, displaying no outward signs of having delivered a child less than twenty-four hours prior. Sitting to my left was Phoebe, and to my right was a thick binder containing the complete forensic paper trail of Flynn’s embezzlement.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom slammed open. Flynn burst inside, his tie slightly askew, his forehead slick with sweat.

"Mabel! What is this circus?!" Flynn demanded, slamming his palm onto the table. "Board members, I demand you ignore this woman! She is currently suffering from postpartum instability! She gave birth yesterday! She is mentally unfit to hold any corporate authority, let alone chair an emergency meeting!"

The board members exchanged uncomfortable glances. Old Mr. Harrison, the senior board member who had been a close ally of Flynn’s late father, cleared his throat. "Flynn... sit down."

"I will not sit down!" Flynn yelled, pointing an accusing finger at me. "She is trying to execute a personal vendetta because of a private marital disagreement! She has frozen my corporate accounts and blocked the Apex Tech acquisition!"

"The Apex Tech acquisition was funded using capital derived from the Vance Family Reserve," I said smoothly, my voice calm, icy, and totally commanding. I didn't even raise my tone, yet the entire room fell dead silent. "Capital that you illegally diverted to pay off offshore entities."

I tapped the button on the control console at the center of the table. The massive wall screen behind me illuminated, displaying a series of complex financial flowcharts.

"Over the last eighteen months," I explained, looking directly at the board members, "Chief Executive Officer Flynn Vance systematically siphoned eleven point two million dollars from corporate asset pools into an unlisted Cayman entity, Aegis Asset Management. This money was not used for R&D, corporate expansion, or strategic acquisitions. It was used to purchase a seven-million-dollar luxury apartment on the Upper East Side, pay a two-million-dollar retainer to an private medical team, and fund monthly personal stipends for a former low-level intern, Selina Chen."

Gasps echoed across the table. Mr. Harrison’s eyes widened in disgust as he examined the bank statements printed in front of him.

"This constitutes gross negligence, breach of fiduciary duty, and clear criminal conversion of corporate assets," I continued. "As the Sole Managing Trustee holding fifty-two percent of the voting shares of Vance Global Enterprises, I have officially exercised my rights under Article 9 of the corporate charter."

Flynn’s face went from pale white to a deep, dark red. "You can't do that! You don't own those shares! My father built this company!"

"Your father built the company, Flynn," I said, looking him dead in the eye with utter contempt. "But I saved it from bankruptcy five years ago when you mismanaged the European expansion. I restructured the debt, I secured the institutional backing, and I placed those shares into the revocable trust that I control. You were merely an appointed manager. And managers who steal from the till are terminated."

I turned to the board. "I move for an immediate vote to remove Flynn Vance as Chief Executive Officer of Vance Global Enterprises, effective immediately, and replace him on an interim basis with Senior Managing Director Arthur Vance."

"Seconded!" Mr. Harrison voiced instantly, slamming his file shut.

"All in favor?" I asked.

Every single hand around the table went up. Flynn stood frozen, staring at the raised hands of the very men he had played golf with just last weekend.

"Motion passed unanimously," I said, signing the decree with a silver fountain pen. "Security, please escort Mr. Vance off the premises. He has five minutes to clear his personal belongings from the executive suite under security supervision."
