Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Cliff

Three weeks later, Maya was fully recovered, running through the sunny corridors of the estate once again alongside her brothers. The ring of corrupt doctors, pharmaceutical executives, and fake adoption agencies had been utterly dismantled by federal authorities, making international headlines.

It was late evening, and the estate was bathed in the soft, golden light of the summer sunset.

Caden walked out onto the grand stone terrace overlooking the ocean cliffs. Elena was standing near the balustrade, watching the waves crash against the rocks below, a warm breeze gently playing with her dark hair. She wore a simple white summer dress, looking radiant, free, and completely at peace.

Caden walked up behind her, sliding his arms around her waist and resting his chin softly against her shoulder. Elena leaned back into his broad chest with a contented sigh, resting her hands over his.

"The federal prosecutor called an hour ago," Caden murmured into her ear. "Arthur Sterling and Marcus Kane were sentenced to life without parole."

"Good," Elena whispered, turning her head to look at him. "It's finally over."

"It's over," Caden agreed. He turned her around in his arms so she was facing him.

The terrifying mafia don who had once terrified an entire city looked at her with an expression of such tender, unreserved adoration that it took Elena’s breath away. Over the past months, their forced partnership had blossomed into something fierce, unspoken, and deeply profound—a bond forged in the fires of shared grief, protection, and unconditional love.

"I brought you out here because I have a confession to make," Caden said, his voice dropping into a low, husky register.

Elena smiled, raising an eyebrow playfully. "A confession? The great Caden Voss has secrets?"

"Fourteen months ago, when I brought those three screaming babies home from the hospital, I thought my life was effectively over," Caden said, taking both of her hands into his large, warm palms. "I was living in an empty house, surrounded by enemies, raising three children who hated me. I was a ghost, Elena."

Elena’s eyes filled with soft tears as she listened.

"And then you walked up to that booth in a greasy diner, picked up a small wooden bear, and saved my life," Caden continued, his hazel eyes shining with emotion. "You didn't just give my children back their mother, Elena. You gave me a home. You taught me how to love them... and you taught me how to love again."

Caden reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He slipped down onto one knee on the cool stone terrace, opening the box to reveal a stunning, flawless emerald ring surrounded by brilliant diamonds.

"Elena Voss," Caden said, his voice shaking with genuine vulnerability. "You are the strongest, bravest, most breathtaking woman I have ever known. You are the mother of my children, the guardian of my heart, and the love of my life. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Will you marry me?"

Elena covered her mouth with both hands, tears of pure joy spilling over her lashes. She looked at the man kneeling before her—no longer a cold monster of the underworld, but the man who had fought for her, protected her, and loved her beyond measure.

"Yes," Elena choked out through her happy tears, stepping forward. "Yes, Caden! A thousand times, yes!"

Caden let out a breathless laugh, slipping the ring onto her finger before standing up and pulling her into a deep, passionate kiss that seemed to stop time itself. The ocean breeze swept around them as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in glorious shades of gold and crimson.
