Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Well

With Vance disgraced and Arthur Sterling awaiting trial in federal custody, peace seemed to finally settle over the estate. But the ghosts of the past were not so easily buried.
It was a warm Tuesday afternoon, and Elena was in the estate’s sunlit garden, watching Leo, Julian, and Maya chase butterflies across the manicured lawn. The triplets were thriving; their cheeks were rosy, their laughter constant, and they no longer cried at night. They were safe, loved, and whole.
Suddenly, Maya stumbled and fell into the grass. Elena smiled, expecting her to pop back up, but Maya didn't move. She rolled onto her side, whimpering softly.
"Maya?" Elena called, dropping the blanket she was folding and rushing over.
By the time Elena reached her, Maya’s breathing was shallow and raspy. Her skin had turned alarmingly pale, and small blue spots were blooming around her lips. Leo and Julian stopped playing, wailing in distress as they pointed at their sister.
"Caden!" Elena screamed at the top of her lungs, grabbing Maya into her arms. "Ortega! Help!"
Within seconds, Caden burst through the patio doors, sprinting across the lawn with Ortega right behind him. The moment Caden saw his daughter limp in Elena’s arms, his face drained of all color.
"What happened?!" Caden demanded, scooping both Elena and Maya up toward the waiting SUV.
"I don't know!" Elena wept, pressing her ear to Maya’s chest. Her heart was beating at a frantic, erratic pace. "She was fine a minute ago—she just collapsed!"
They tore through the city streets with police escorts clearing the way, arriving at the private medical center in under eight minutes. Maya was rushed straight into the pediatric intensive care unit, leaving Caden and Elena standing behind the swinging double doors, trapped in a nightmare.
Hours bled into one another. Elena paced the floor back and forth, her hands clutched over her chest, praying with every breath she had left. Caden stood like a statue against the wall, his fists clenched so hard his knuckles bled through his skin.
At midnight, the Chief of Medicine stepped out into the waiting room, pulling off his surgical mask.
"Is she alive?" Caden asked, his voice completely raw.
"She is stable, Mr. Voss," the doctor said softly. "We managed to pump her stomach and neutralize the agent. But it was extremely close."
Elena let out a ragged sob, dropping to her knees. Caden caught her before she hit the floor, pulling her tight against his chest, his own body shaking violently.
"What agent?" Caden growled into the doctor's direction. "What was it?"
"A synthetic nerve agent," the doctor revealed gravely. "Highly localized. It was tasteless and absorbed through ingestion. If she were an adult, it would have been fatal within an hour."
"Poison," Elena whispered, horror twisting her stomach. "How could she have ingested poison in our own garden?"
Ortega stepped into the waiting room, his phone in hand, his face darker than night. "Boss. We checked the garden surveillance. Two hours before the children went out, one of the groundskeepers slipped past the outer perimeter guard. He sprayed a liquid compound directly onto the wild berries growing along the stone wall."
Caden’s eyes turned entirely black with a murderous rage. "Who hired him?"
"The money came from a private account tied to Dr. Harrison's former associate," Ortega reported. "They knew Harrison was talking to federal prosecutors. They wanted to send a message to you, Boss—by taking one of the children."

Caden released Elena gently, stepping toward Ortega. "Find him. I don't care if you have to tear this city apart brick by brick. Bring me the man who poisoned my daughter."
"No," Elena said, her voice ringing out through the quiet hospital corridor. She wiped the tears from her face, standing tall, a fierce, terrifying light blazing in her eyes. "Don't just bring the groundskeeper, Ortega. Bring the man who gave the order. It's time we end this war permanently."
