Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Siege

Two months after Elena moved into the Voss estate, the peaceful rhythm she had fought so hard to build was shattered.
While the press conference announcing Elena as the legitimate mother of the Voss triplets had cleared her name, it had also ignited a firestorm within the board of Voss Enterprises. Arthur Sterling’s faction, led by his ruthless long-time associate, Richard Vance, refused to accept Caden’s absolute authority. They viewed Elena as an illegitimate intruder and saw an opportunity to strip Caden of his controlling shares by claiming he had compromised the company’s reputation.
Elena stood in the dressing room of the master suite, smoothing down the front of a tailored navy-blue silk suit. Today was the emergency board meeting where Vance intended to call for a vote of no confidence.
"You don't have to go through with this," Caden said, stepping into the doorway. He was wearing a dark charcoal suit, looking every bit the formidable titan, though his eyes softened as he looked at her. "Ortega can keep you and the children at the safehouse in the countryside until the board meeting is over."
"No," Elena said, turning to face him, adjusting her collar with steady fingers. "Vance is using my past as his weapon against you. He’s telling the shareholders that I’m an uneducated waitress who coerced you into giving up control. If I hide, I prove him right. We stand together, Caden."
Caden walked over, his heavy boots silent on the carpet, and cupped her face in his hands. His thumb stroked her cheekbone, a gesture that had become second nature between them over the past few weeks. "They are wolves, Elena."
"I survived Gary, Dr. Harrison, and your father-in-law," Elena replied, leaning into his touch, her hazel eyes bright with determination. "A few men in expensive suits won't scare me."
An hour later, the silver double doors of the Voss Enterprises boardroom opened. The high-rise glass room overlooking the city skyline was filled with sixteen senior board members, all whispering nervously as Caden walked in, with Elena walking steadfastly by his side.
Richard Vance, a hawkish man with slicked-back gray hair and a sneering posture, stood at the head of the conference table.
"Caden," Vance said, his voice dripping with condescension. "We expected you, but bringing your... guest... into a closed executive session is highly inappropriate."
"Miss Voss holds fifty percent co-custody of the Voss estate's trust," Caden said smoothly, taking his seat at the head of the table. Elena sat directly to his right. "Which means she represents twenty-five percent of the voting stock in this room. Speak carefully, Vance."
Vance’s face darkened, but he slammed a heavy folder onto the table. "This board cannot ignore the scandal! You’ve locked up Arthur Sterling, brought in a woman with no corporate background, and tied the company's name to human trafficking and surrogacy fraud! The stock is plummeting. We are moving to strip you of executive control, effective immediately."
The room erupted into hushed, tense chatter. Several board members nodded in agreement, clearly intimidated by Vance’s aggressive tone.
Elena leaned forward, resting her hands flat on the glass table. "The stock isn't dropping because of the scandal, Mr. Vance," she said, her voice cutting cleanly through the noise. "It’s dropping because you’ve spent the last forty-eight hours leaking fake financial reports to the press to artificially deflate our valuation."
Vance went pale. "What absurd nonsense are you—"
"Ortega," Caden commanded softly.
The boardroom doors opened, and Ortega tossed a thick stack of encrypted emails and bank transfers directly onto the center of the table.
"Four days ago, Mr. Vance opened a short position against Voss Enterprises stock through a shell corporation registered in Panama," Elena explained, standing up and looking around the table at the shocked board members. "He manufactured this crisis to buy back controlling shares at a fraction of their value, planning to sell our shipping routes to a foreign cartel once Caden was removed."
The room broke into absolute chaos. Board members jumped up, inspecting the documents, shouting over one another as Vance stammered, scrambling for an excuse.
"You thought because I worked in a diner that I couldn't read a balance sheet," Elena said quietly to Vance, her posture unflinching. "My mother was an accountant for twenty years before she fell ill. She taught me how to find thieves in the ledger when I was twelve."
Caden stood up, stepping close to Vance. The sheer, suffocating air of menace that radiated from Caden made Vance shrink back into his chair.
"Security," Caden ordered cold as ice. "Escort Mr. Vance from the building. The federal authorities are waiting for him in the lobby."

As Vance was dragged out kicking and screaming, the remaining board members sat in stunned silence. Caden looked around the room, then turned his gaze to Elena, his eyes burning with immense pride and an emotion that ran far deeper than respect.
"Meeting adjourned," Caden announced. "Voss Enterprises remains under the unified leadership of the Voss family."
