Chapter 7 - The Reckoning at Sunrise

By six o'clock the following morning, the storm over Lake Michigan had cleared, leaving a brilliant, icy sunrise that painted the skyline of Chicago in shades of rose and gold.

The grand auditorium of the Calloway Biomedical Corporate Headquarters—located three blocks from Harbor Ridge Medical Center—was packed with over two hundred board members, institutional investors, and national journalists.

At the main podium stood Malcolm Calloway, looking immaculate in a dark navy suit, though dark circles under his eyes betrayed a sleepless night. Beside him sat Victoria Sloan, wearing a black silk dress, her face set in a forced, confident smile.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Malcolm announced into the microphone, his voice booming through the auditorium's speaker system. "We gather today under solemn circumstances. As reported by Dr. Robert Vance this morning, my beloved nephew, Ethan Calloway, has suffered a irreversible decline in respiratory function."

A quiet, sympathetic murmur rippled through the audience of shareholders.

"Therefore," Malcolm continued, holding up a thick leather-bound document, "under the emergency succession provisions of the company charter, I am officially executing the full transfer of executive voting shares to the Calloway Trust, effective immediately, and authorizing the merger with Vanguard Health—"

"The Calloway Trust is null and void, Malcolm," a powerful voice cut through the auditorium.

The heavy mahogany double doors at the back of the auditorium swung open with a dramatic flourish.

Every camera lens in the room swung around simultaneously.

Walking down the central aisle, dressed in a sharp black suit tailored to his leaner frame, was Ethan Calloway.

He moved with a slight limp, his right hand resting comfortably on a polished silver-headed walking stick, but his posture was commanding, his grey eyes piercing, and his presence absolutely overwhelming.

Walking beside him, holding his hand with unyielding strength, was Grace Morales, stunning in an elegant dark green wool coat. And behind them walked Owen and Lily, accompanied by four uniformed Chicago Police detectives and the Chief Assistant State's Attorney.

The auditorium erupted into absolute, unbridled chaos!

Flashbulbs exploded like a thousand tiny lightning strikes. Journalists leaped from their chairs, shouting questions at the top of their lungs!

"ETHAN! IS THAT ETHAN CALLOWAY?!" "MR. CALLOWAY, ARE YOU FULLY RECOVERED?!" "WHAT IS YOUR STATEMENT ON THE MERGER?!"

Malcolm stood behind the podium, his face going from pale to a terrifying, mottled purple. His knuckles turned white against the wooden edge of the lectern. "This... this is an outrage! He is medically unfit! Security, clear the aisle!"

None of the corporate security guards moved. They stood frozen near the walls, staring in absolute shock at the man whose name was carved into the silver letters above the building entrance.

Ethan walked straight up the steps of the stage, stopping three feet from Malcolm. He didn't raise his voice, but the microphone on the podium picked up every word he spoke.

"You look like you've seen a ghost, Uncle Malcolm," Ethan said softly, a dark, brilliant smile touching his lips.

"Ethan..." Victoria stammered, backing away from her seat, her voice trembling violently. "Ethan, darling... you're alive! It's a miracle!"

"Save it, Victoria," Ethan said without even turning his head toward her. "I heard everything you said in Suite 1004 over the last eight months. I heard you discuss my share valuation while you sat beside my bed. I heard you complain that my heart was taking too long to stop."

Victoria collapsed back into her chair, covering her face in pure, humiliated shame.

Ethan turned his gaze fully onto Malcolm.

"Three hours ago, State Police raided Dr. Vance's private office," Ethan revealed into the microphone, his voice echoing across the silent auditorium. "They recovered twelve vials of Neurol-7 bearing your private digital authorization code. They also recovered the encrypted wire transfers sent from your off-shore account in Grand Cayman to the three men who tried to breach my hospital room last night."

Malcolm tried to speak, his mouth opening and closing like a fish pulled from water, but no sound came out.

The Chief Assistant State's Attorney stepped onto the stage, holding an official arrest warrant. "Malcolm Calloway, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate fraud, and the unlawful administration of controlled substances. You have the right to remain silent."

As two state troopers stepped forward and clicked silver handcuffs around Malcolm’s wrists, the disgraced former chairman looked at Grace, then at the little boy standing beside her.

"She... she was just a research assistant," Malcolm whispered, his voice cracking with defeated madness. "She had nothing!"

"She had my heart, Malcolm," Ethan said, stepping closer to Grace and taking her hand tightly in his. "And she gave me my life back."
