Chapter 3 - The Broken Contract

"Try it, Malcolm," Grace said, her voice turning as cold and sharp as the broken glass on the floor. "Call the police. Tell them to bring every reporter standing in the lower lobby up to this room. I’m sure the Chicago press would love to know why the chairman of Calloway Biomedical is threatening a mother and two children in a dying man's hospital room."

Malcolm stopped. His eyes flicked nervously toward the heavy double doors leading to the outer hallway, where the faint sound of news cameras and lobby traffic could always be heard.

Victoria looked between them, her sharp mind piecing together the unsaid truths hanging in the air. She looked at Grace, then at the little boy holding Grace’s hand.

Owen’s dark hair, his straight brows, and the sharp structure of his nose were an unmistakable, terrifying mirror image of the man lying unconscious in the bed.

"Malcolm..." Victoria gasped, her manicured hand coming up to touch her pearl necklace. "Is that... is that Ethan’s child?"

"Silence, Victoria!" Malcolm hissed without looking at her.

"It's his son, isn't it?!" Victoria’s voice rose in pitch, panic breaking through her refined facade. "Four years ago, before Ethan’s accident... the girl from the laboratory! The research assistant who vanished overnight!"

"I said be quiet!" Malcolm snapped, turning back to Grace with venomous intent. "You signed a non-disclosure agreement, Grace. You took two hundred thousand dollars to walk away from this family and never return to Chicago."

Grace let out a harsh, bitter laugh that lacked any joy.

"I signed your fraudulent paper because you threatened to destroy my brother's medical license!" Grace said, her voice echoing off the glass walls. "And I didn't take a single penny of your blood money, Malcolm! I left the check on your desk in the old laboratory. Check your accounting records—it was never cashed!"

Malcolm’s jaw worked silently. He hadn't expected her to know that. He had assumed a poor girl from the valley would have spent the money within weeks.

"Mommy," Owen whispered, pulling on Grace’s coat sleeve, his young face pale. "The man in the bed... he moved his hand when Lily sang."

Grace froze. She slowly turned her head to look at the bed.

For the first time since she had sprinted into the room, Grace looked directly at Ethan Calloway.

He looked so different from the brilliant, energetic young scientist she had loved four years ago. His cheeks were hollow, his skin pale as paper, his tall frame diminished under the heavy medical blankets. But as Grace stared at him, she saw the faint, trembling movement of his right hand resting against the white sheet.

His fingers were reaching toward the sound of her voice.

Beep... beep... beep...

The heart monitor’s cadence rose sharply, shifting from sixty beats per minute to eighty-five.

"He's reacting," Dr. Leonard Shaw said quietly, stepping out from the corner of the room where he had been observing the monitor. The lead neurologist looked at the digital readout with genuine astonishment. "His neural activity levels are spiking across the temporal lobe. That hasn't happened in eight months."

"It's a coincidence!" Malcolm insisted loudly, stepping between Dr. Shaw and the bedside controls. "It's an involuntary reflex brought on by the loud noise and shattered glass!"

"It isn't a reflex," Dr. Shaw countered firmly, pushing his glasses up his nose as he studied the brainwave scan on his tablet. "Look at the alpha wave modulation. This is complex cognitive recognition. He is responding to her voice."

Victoria reached out, grabbing Malcolm’s arm with desperate strength. "Malcolm, if Ethan wakes up before the board meeting tomorrow, the power of attorney transfer is void! Everything we’ve planned for the merger with Vanguard Health disappears!"

"He isn't going to wake up," Malcolm said, his voice dropping into a dark, ruthless register that sent a shiver down Grace’s spine.

Malcolm turned to the head of security standing near the door. "Remove these people immediately. Escort them off hospital property. If they set foot on the tenth floor again, have them detained for corporate espionage and assault."

"Don't touch them!" a rasping, hollow voice suddenly croaked from the bed.

The entire room went dead, terrifyingly silent.

Every eye swung slowly toward the center of the room.

Ethan Calloway’s eyes were open.

May you like

They were unfocused, glassy, and bloodshot, but they were unquestionably open. He was turning his head slowly across the pillow, his dark grey eyes searching through the dim light of the room until they locked onto Grace.

"Grace..." Ethan whispered, his throat raw and dry, as if speaking required pulling glass through his lungs. "Grace... don't... go."
