Chapter 6 - The Siege of Suite 1004

"Stay behind me!" Dr. Shaw shouted, shining his flashlight beam toward the heavy oak entrance door.
The door swung open slowly.
Framed in the dim, red emergency light of the hallway stood three large men wearing dark tactical gear, face masks, and heavy leather gloves. The leader carried a black leather medical bag and a heavy steel crowbar.
"Dr. Shaw," the lead man said in a low, gravelly voice. "Step away from the patient. We are transferring Mr. Calloway to an off-site transport under emergency protocol."
"You have no authority here!" Dr. Shaw demanded, stepping in front of the bed. "Who sent you?!"
The man didn't answer. He raised his hand, gesturing to the two men behind him. One of them pulled a heavy stun baton from his belt, while the other stepped directly toward Dr. Shaw, shoving the elderly doctor hard against the wall. Dr. Shaw’s head struck the wooden paneling, and he slumped to the carpet, unconscious.
"Dr. Shaw!" Grace screamed.
The lead man ignored her, walking straight to the head of Ethan’s bed. He opened his black medical bag, pulling out a heavy glass syringe pre-filled with a clear, amber liquid.
"Get away from him!" Grace shrieked, grabbing a heavy brass desk lamp from the side table and swinging it with all her strength into the lead man's chest.
CLANG!
The lamp struck his shoulder, knocking the man back two steps. He grunted in surprise, looking at Grace with cold, dangerous eyes.
"You're making a mistake, lady," the man growled, reaching out to grab Grace by her collar.
Suddenly, a high-pitched, wild screech echoed through the dark room.
Seven-year-old Owen leaped off the couch like a wildcat, charging into the room and biting down hard on the man’s exposed wrist!
"AAARGH!" the man yelled, dropping the syringe onto the carpet as he thrashed his arm, trying to shake the furious young boy off his sleeve.
"Owen! No!" Grace screamed.
At the same moment, little Lily ran to the bedside controls, her tiny hands finding the heavy red emergency lever installed on the wall—the one marked FIRE SUPPRESSION & CODE BLUE INTRUDER.
She pulled it down with all her tiny weight.
WHIRRRRRR—BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
A deafening, high-decibel fire alarm shattered the silence of the entire tenth floor! Instantly, the ceiling sprinkler system activated, showering cold, heavy water down over the entire suite, soaking the intruders, the furniture, and the carpet!
In the hallway outside, the heavy steel fire doors slammed shut automatically, and the heavy boots of the hospital’s primary night security team echoed loudly as ten armed guards charged up the fire stairs!
"Aborted! Aborted!" the lead intruder yelled, shaking Owen off his arm and grabbing his dropped bag. "The whole floor is locked down! Move!"
The three men turned and sprinted out into the dark, water-drenched hallway, shoving past the arriving security guards in a desperate bid to reach the roof helipad before the local police arrived.
Inside the suite, the backup generator finally roared to life. The overhead lights flickered on, illuminating the water-soaked room.
Grace rushed to Owen, pulling him into her arms, checking his face, his arms, his hands for any injuries. "Owen! Are you hurt?! Speak to me, baby!"
"I bit him, Mommy!" Owen gasped, his teeth chattering from the cold sprinkler water, but his eyes blazing with fierce pride. "I bit the bad man!"
"You were so brave," Grace wept, clutching him tight, then reaching out to pull Lily into the warm embrace as well. "Both of you... you saved us."
From the bed, a sudden, strong gasp of air filled the room.
Ethan Calloway was sitting upright.
His blankets were soaked with sprinkler water, his dark hair plastered across his forehead, but his eyes were completely clear, fully sharp, and burning with a fierce, brilliant intelligence that had been locked away for eight long months.
He pulled the IV line from his arm with a single, quick motion, looking around the room at the water, the fire alarms, and the two children standing in his mother's arms.

Then Ethan looked at Grace.
"Grace," Ethan said, his voice no longer a weak rasp, but rich, strong, and deeply clear. "Where is my uncle?"
