Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

The medical suite exploded into chaotic motion.

Dr. Shaw shoved past Malcolm, calling out urgent commands to two attending nurses who rushed in from the adjacent monitoring station.

"Get ten milligrams of IV fluids! Check his pupil response! Prepare an arterial blood sample immediately!" Dr. Shaw shouted, shining a small penlight into Ethan’s eyes. "Ethan! Can you hear me? Blink twice if you understand my voice!"

Ethan blinked twice, slowly, deliberately. But his eyes never left Grace. His frail, trembling hand lifted an inch off the mattress, his fingers outstretched into the air toward her.

"Ethan..." Grace gasped, dropping to her knees beside the mattress, completely ignoring Victoria, Malcolm, and the security guards. Tears blurred her vision as she reached out and wrapped both of her hands around his frail fingers. "I'm here. I'm right here."

The moment her skin touched his, Ethan’s heart rate stabilized into a strong, rhythmic beat on the monitor. A heavy, exhausted breath left his chest, and his eyes drifted shut, not into a coma, but into a deep, natural sleep.

"His brain activity is settling into an REM sleep cycle," Dr. Shaw announced, looking at his tablet with pure wonder. "He’s out of the comatose state. He’s sleeping."

Malcolm stood near the window, his face dark as a thundercloud. His hands were clenched so tightly into fists that his knuckles were stark white.

"This changes nothing," Malcolm said, stepping forward, though his voice lacked its previous absolute authority. "He is confused. He spent eight months in a vegetative state. He doesn't have the legal capacity to make decisions or halt the board meeting tomorrow."

"He just spoke coherent words and recognized a specific person, Mr. Calloway," Dr. Shaw said sternly, turning to face Malcolm with clear professional defiance. "Under medical law, I am required to suspend all power-of-attorney transfers immediately pending a full psychiatric and neurological evaluation."

Victoria looked as if she were about to faint. "Leonard! You can't do that! The board—"

"The board will have to wait, Miss Sloan," Dr. Shaw snapped. "My primary duty is to my patient, not your investment portfolio."

Grace stood up slowly from the bedside, keeping one hand resting protectively over Ethan’s sleeping fingers. She turned to face Malcolm and Victoria, her chin raised, her posture tall and unyielding despite her worn, faded clothes.

"You heard the doctor," Grace said softly. "Get out."

"You have no authority here, Grace," Malcolm snarled, taking a threatening step toward her. "You are nobody in this city. You live in a two-room basement apartment in the West Ward. You clean grease off coats for twelve dollars an hour. Do you really think you can stand against me?"

"I don't have to stand against you alone, Malcolm," Grace said, pointing toward her two children, who were standing brave and tall beside the bed, watching the scene with quiet, intelligent eyes. "I brought the true heirs of Ethan Calloway into this room today. And tomorrow morning, when the press asks why Ethan woke up, I will tell them everything."

Malcolm stared at her for five long, suffocating seconds. The air in the room felt thick with impending disaster. He realized that pulling security on her right now in front of Dr. Shaw and the hospital staff would be suicide for his public reputation.

"We are leaving, Victoria," Malcolm said, his tone icy cold.

He turned on his heel and swept out of the room, his heavy coat flaring behind him. Victoria glared at Grace with pure, unadulterated hatred before rushing out into the hallway after him, her high heels clicking loudly against the marble floor.

Once the heavy oak doors clicked shut, the room fell into a heavy, quiet calm.

Dr. Shaw let out a long breath, wiping sweat from his forehead. He looked at Grace with deep respect. "You have incredible courage, young lady. But you need to be very careful. Malcolm Calloway does not lose gracefully."

"I know," Grace said, looking down at Ethan’s peaceful face. "He’s been trying to destroy my life for four years. But this time, I’m not running away."

Lily tugged gently on Grace’s skirt. "Mommy? Is the man going to be okay now?"

May you like

Grace knelt down, pulling both Lily and Owen into a tight, warm embrace, kissing their cheeks over and over as tears of relief finally spilled down her face.

"Yes, my sweet angels," Grace whispered, looking back at Ethan’s face. "The song brought him home."
