Chapter 10 - The True Celebration

A year later, it was time for Lucía’s second birthday.

This time, there were no gold-rimmed glasses, no ivory tablecloths, and no private clubs filled with judgmental strangers.

The backyard of our home was decorated with bright, colorful balloons, stream of paper flags, and long wooden tables filled with homemade food. My parents’ friends, my neighbors, and the people who worked with me at the floral shop were all there, chatting loudly and laughing freely.

Arthur sat at a table, happily drinking cheap lemonade from a plastic cup, talking animationally with my father about baseball.

Lucía stood in the center of the lawn, wearing a simple, comfortable denim overalls. She was covered in dirt from playing in the garden, a massive, unbothered grin on her face.

When it was time for the cake, everyone gathered around. I carried out a large, slightly lopsided chocolate cake covered in thick frosting and colorful sprinkles—the exact cake I had wanted to give her a year ago.

We began to sing. Lucía clapped her tiny hands, bouncing up and down to the rhythm of the song. Her bright blue eyes bounced from face to face, reflecting nothing but warmth, safety, and absolute love.

As she blew out her two little candles, the entire backyard erupted into cheers and genuine applause. Lucía immediately reached out and smashed her hand into the frosting, shoving a giant piece into her mouth, getting it all over her nose and cheeks.

Everyone laughed out loud. I knelt down, pulled her into my arms, and let the chocolate frosting get all over my clean white shirt. I didn't care about the stains. I didn't care about the expensive judgment of a world I no longer belonged to.

I looked at my daughter, her blue eyes shining with pure happiness. We had survived the storm. We had dismantled the lies. We had proven that dignity, love, and truth were worth more than any dynasty.

I kissed her frosting-covered cheek and whispered, "Happy birthday, my beautiful girl. You belong right here."
