Chapter 9 - The Silver Hairpin

Emily slowly lifted the velvet lid of the box.
Inside, resting on a bed of dark green silk, was her mother’s silver hairpin.
It had been completely restored by one of the finest jewelers in Manhattan. The tarnish was gone, polished to a brilliant, radiant silver shine. The tiny bent tip had been expertly straightened, and embedded directly at the crown of the pin was a single, flawless pear-cut diamond that caught the sunlight, sparkling like a tiny star.
Emily gasped, her hands trembling as she lifted the hairpin from the box.
"Daniel..." she choked out, tears brimming in her eyes. "You found it... I thought... I thought it was gone forever..."
"It was never gone," I said, kissing her cheek. "I retrieved it from the house that very morning. I had a master jeweler reinforce the silver and set that diamond right at the top."
"Why the diamond?" she whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek.
"Because your mother gave you that pin to remind you of your worth," I said gently, looking deep into her eyes. "The diamond is there to remind you that no matter how much dirt, cruelty, or garbage toxic people try to throw over you, your light can never be diminished."
Emily turned around in my arms, pulling me into a fierce, desperate embrace, weeping tears of joy, relief, and profound closure against my neck.
Lily ran over, wrapping her little arms around both of our legs, joining the warm embrace.

"Mommy! Is that grandma's hairpin?!" Lily cheered, looking up with big, bright eyes.
"Yes, baby," Emily laughed through her tears, kneeling down to hug our daughter. "It’s grandma’s hairpin. And it’s shining brighter than ever."
