Chapter 2 - The First Wave at 8:00 AM

At 7:55 AM, back at my mother’s sprawling suburban mansion, the atmosphere was triumphant.

Margaret, dressed in her silk robe, was sipping dark coffee in the dining room while Vanessa browsed an iPad, looking at designer handbags. Mark was sitting at the oak table, laughing with Greg about a golf tournament. The broken crystal bar cart had already been swept away by the maid, the blood scrubbed from the hardwood, as if Emily’s existence had been erased overnight.

"He’ll be here by nine," Greg chuckled, taking a bite of his croissant. "Men like Daniel don't have the spine for conflict. A single threat from CPS and he’ll bring that girl back on her knees."

"She ruined my grandmother’s crystal," Margaret said coldly, setting down her china cup. "She’s lucky I don't file property damage charges against her."

At precisely 8:00 AM, Greg’s phone rang. He smiled, expecting it to be me begging for mercy.

Instead, it was his chief financial officer.

"Greg!" the officer shouted, his voice echoing loudly off the dining room walls. "Where are you?! The State Revenue Enforcement Agency and auditors from Vance & Sterling just pulled up to the clinic with a court summons! They’ve locked down the servers and frozen our merchant accounts!"

Greg stood up so fast his chair screeched against the floor. "What?! On Christmas week?! That’s impossible! On what authority?!"

"A formal fraud and embezzlement alert filed by Daniel Sterling!" the CFO yelled. "They’re citing off-the-books cash transactions and tax evasion on your laser dentistry equipment leases! The bank just suspended our two-million-dollar operating line of credit!"

Before Greg could process the shock, Mark’s phone began buzzing frantically. He picked it up, his face losing all color within seconds.

"Mark Sterling?" a deep voice boomed through the speaker. "This is Detective Harris from the Commercial Crimes Division. We have executed a seizure warrant on your real estate escrow accounts following a certified whistle-blower filing regarding commingled buyer deposits."

"Whistle-blower?!" Mark stammered, looking around the room in absolute horror. "Who filed a whistle-blower report?!"

"Your brother, Daniel Sterling," the detective stated plainly. "He provided full forensic logs forty-five minutes ago. Stay where you are. Officers are en route to your home to deliver formal summonses."

The breakfast table went dead silent. The pastries, the coffee, the smug laughter—everything vanished in an instant.
