Chapter 3 - The Eviction of the Myth

By 9:30 AM, I was standing in the precinct office of the County Sheriff, handing over a thick manila folder to Chief Inspector Miller.

Inside were three critical items:

High-resolution photographs of Emily’s bloodied arm and head taken in the ER.

The certified medical record detailing the stitches and blunt trauma caused by Margaret’s assault.

An audio file recorded automatically by my smartwatch from the moment Vanessa dropped the hairpin into the trash to the moment my mother struck Emily and shouted, "You'll always be trailer trash... get out!"

Chief Miller listened to the audio, his face darkening with every second of shouting, the slap sounding like thunder in the quiet office, followed by Lily’s hysterical screams.

"This is open-and-shut aggravated battery, unlawful endangerment of a minor, and domestic violence," Miller said, closing the file with a heavy slam. "Your mother threw a blow that drove an adult into glass right next to a seven-year-old child."

"I want the restraining order processed immediately, Chief," I said, my voice steady. "And I am pressing full criminal charges against Margaret Sterling. No deals. No dismissals."

"Consider it done, Daniel," Miller said, standing up and putting on his coat. "We’re heading to the house now."

While the police dispatched two squad cars to my mother’s house, I stepped into the hallway and opened my second laptop.

My mother had lived in that grand mansion for twenty years, boasting to all her socialite friends that it was her "family estate." What she had never told anyone—and what I had kept quiet out of misplaced filial duty—was that the deed to the house didn't belong to her.

It was held entirely under the Sterling Family Asset Holding Company, of which I owned 51% of the voting shares, left to me directly by my late father who knew how reckless my mother was with finances.

I pulled up the corporate portal, uploaded the police report charging Margaret Sterling with a violent felony committed on the property, and executed a formal Revocation of Residency.

By 10:15 AM, two squad cars and an eviction marshal were pulling up the long, stone driveway of Margaret’s estate.
