Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Greg and Mark

Over the next forty-eight hours, the dominoes fell with terrifying speed.

Greg’s dental practice was slammed with an emergency state audit. It turned out that for three years, Greg had been charging insurance companies for high-end cosmetic procedures while performing basic fillings, pocketing the difference to fund his lavish lifestyle, luxury cars, and Vanessa’s shopping sprees.

By Wednesday afternoon, the State Board of Dental Examiners suspended his license pending a full criminal fraud hearing. His bank accounts were frozen, his assets seized, and his high-paying clients fled in droves after the local newspaper published a front-page article on the investigation.

Mark’s real estate firm fared no better. The forensic audit I requested revealed that Mark had been using client escrow funds to cover mortgage payments on his vacation home in Florida. Within seventy-two hours, two major development partners pulled out of his primary commercial projects, demanding immediate repayment of twelve million dollars in bridge loans.

On Thursday morning, Vanessa called Emily’s cell phone.

Emily put the call on speaker while sitting at our cozy kitchen table in our new private townhome—a bright, warm residence I had purchased months ago as a backup plan, far away from my mother’s sphere of influence.

"Emily... please," Vanessa sobbed hysterically into the speaker. "Please tell Daniel to stop! Greg lost his license! They’re repossessing our cars! We can't pay the mortgage! We have nothing left!"

Emily looked down at her bandaged arm, her expression calm, peaceful, and entirely unimpressed by the tears.

"Vanessa," Emily said softly. "Are you decorating your life with scrap metal now? I suppose no one ever taught you how to care for valuable things."

"Emily, please! I’m sorry! I shouldn't have thrown the hairpin away! I was jealous of you! I was jealous because Daniel loved you for who you were, while Greg only cared about my looks and my family's money!"

"Apologies don't fix blood on hardwood, Vanessa," Emily replied coldly. "And they don't fix threats made against my daughter."

Emily hung up the phone and blocked the number permanently.
