Chapter 6 - The Counter-Play

In a private suite atop the St. Regis Hotel in Manhattan, Claire sat by the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a mug of warm chamomile tea.

The room was quiet, except for the gentle sounds coming from the adjacent nursery, where two top-tier pediatric nurses were putting six-month-old Alexander and Aurora to bed.

Claire looked out over Central Park. The trees were turning gold and red as autumn set in.

A soft knock came at the door.

"Come in, Marcus," Claire said without turning around.

Marcus, the towering head of Whitmore Security, stepped into the room. He held a secure tablet in his hand.

"Good evening, Miss Whitmore," Marcus said respectfully. "I have two updates for you."

"Start with Daniel," Claire replied, taking a small sip of her tea.

"Mr. Cross signed the final divorce settlement and the complete relinquishment of parental rights at seven o'clock this morning," Marcus reported. "As per your agreement, his personal residence in Chicago has been removed from the legal foreclosure list. He left New York five hours ago on a commercial flight back to Illinois. He has officially resigned from Cross Industries. His remaining shares were bought out by our holding company for pennies on the dollar."

Claire nodded slowly. There was no joy in her heart at hearing this news—only a quiet, profound sense of closure. Daniel Cross was gone from her life. The man she had loved was a memory; the man who had betrayed her was now just another cautionary tale of unchecked ambition.

"And the second update?" Claire asked.

Marcus’s expression hardened. "It's regarding Miss Vanessa Cole. Our intelligence monitoring picked up a surge in dark-web inquiry activity originating from her personal IP address in Chicago three hours ago. She has retained a disgraced former private investigator named Donald Vance—no relation to Mr. Julian Vance—to track your movements and locate the children's residence here in New York."

Claire lowered her teacup. Her eyes, usually calm and composed, sharpened with immediate, maternal instinct.

"She's targeting the babies?" Claire asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous register.

"It appears to be an act of desperation, ma'am," Marcus said. "Cole Logistics filed for Chapter 11 this morning. Her family's wealth has effectively evaporated. She blames you personally for her social and financial downfall."

Claire stood up slowly, her emerald robe catching the soft light of the room. She walked over to the desk, picked up a pen, and looked at Marcus.

"Vanessa Cole thinks I ruined her life because I was vindictive," Claire said coldly. "She doesn't realize that everything that happened to her firm was simply the natural consequence of interfering with my family. But if she dares to put a single toe across the line toward my children..."

Claire paused, looking toward the nursery door, where her babies slept peacefully.

"What are your orders, Miss Whitmore?" Marcus asked, his hand resting ready on his belt.

"Don't block her investigator," Claire said sharply.

Marcus blinked in surprise. "Ma'am?"

"Let her investigator find what he thinks is my location," Claire instructed, a cold, brilliant strategy taking shape in her mind. "Feed him a false itinerary. Tell him I will be visiting the Whitmore private estate in Long Island this weekend with the babies for a quiet family gathering."

Marcus’s eyes lit up with understanding. "A trap."

"Vanessa wants a confrontation," Claire said calmly. "She wants to face the woman who brought her world down. Let's give her the stage she desires—under conditions that we completely control. Coordinate with the state police and federal authorities. When she steps onto that property with intent to harm or extort, I want her put away where she can never threaten another family again."

"Understood, ma'am," Marcus said with a crisp nod. "I'll coordinate with Mr. Julian Vance’s team as well. He expressed great concern for your safety after the incident at the gala last night."

Claire’s expression softened slightly at the mention of Julian.

Over the past six months, Julian Vance had been far more than a business partner. He had been a steady, respectful, and deeply patient presence in her life. He had never pushed her, never asked for anything in return, and had treated her children with utmost gentleness whenever he visited the Whitmore estate.

"Julian is a good man," Claire said softly.

May you like

"He is, ma'am," Marcus agreed. "He's nothing like Daniel Cross."

"No," Claire murmured, looking back out at the glowing skyline of New York. "Julian knows the value of what he holds. Daniel only knew the price."
