Chapter 2 - The Mask Falls

Three weeks after the night at the hospital, the executive boardroom of Cross Industries was bathed in morning sunlight. From the sixty-fifth floor, Daniel Cross could look out over the entire city. A month ago, this view would have filled him with absolute triumph. Now, it felt like an iron cage.
He stood by the glass, holding an untouched cup of espresso. Dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes, and his tie was slightly askew—a rare lapse in presentation for a man who prided himself on flawless composure.
For twenty-one days, he had hired every private investigator, corporate intelligence firm, and off-duty police detective money could buy in the state of Illinois. The result? Nothing.
Claire had vanished.
It was as if Claire Cross—the quiet, practical woman who cooked him dinner, listened to his long rants about tech logistics, and lived in a simple apartment—had never existed. Her social security number showed no recent banking activity. Her phone number was disconnected. Her humble apartment had been cleared out within forty-eight hours of her departure by a professional moving crew that answered to a blind trust based in Delaware.
"Daniel?"
The smooth, purring voice broke his concentration. Vanessa Cole walked into the boardroom, wearing a tailored cream-colored skirt suit that showed off her long legs, her wrist sparkling with the very diamond bracelet Daniel had bought her three weeks ago.
She walked up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist and leaning her head against his back.
"You're brooding again," she whispered, her tone carrying a mix of affection and slight annoyance. "The press conference is in twenty minutes. The board is waiting. The investors are excited about the merger between Cross Industries and Cole Logistics. Why do you look like you're attending a funeral?"
Daniel gently detached her hands from his waist and stepped away, turning to face her.
"I still haven't found her, Vanessa," he said, his voice tight.
Vanessa rolled her eyes softly, crossing her arms. "Daniel, darling, we've talked about this. She panicked. She realized she couldn't keep up with your life once you stepped into the real elite circles. She took some dramatic exit to hurt your ego because she knew you were moving on to someone who actually fits your standing."
"She took my children, Vanessa!" Daniel snapped, slamming his coffee cup onto the mahogany table. "And the doctor at the hospital... he called her an heiress. 'Heiress to a top-3 conglomerate.' What does that mean?"
Vanessa let out a sharp, aristocratic laugh. "Oh, please. It was probably a line she fed the hospital staff to embarrass you! Claire? An heiress? Daniel, she worked as a mid-level marketing consultant when you met her. She drove a four-year-old sedan. She bought her clothes off the rack! If she was royalty, why would she spend three years living in a two-bedroom rental with you?"
Daniel rubbed his temples. That was the logical flaw that kept him up every night. It made no sense. Claire was modest. She was simple. She didn't care about designer labels or private clubs. Whenever he brought home expensive gifts early in their marriage, she had smiled softly and told him he didn't need to spend money to prove his love.
Was it a lie? Or had he simply never truly looked at her?
"Mr. Cross?"
Daniel's chief operating officer, Arthur Vance, stepped quickly into the room, holding a tablet. His face was pale.
"What is it, Arthur?" Daniel asked sharply. "Is it about the press release?"
"No, sir... it's about our primary credit line with Apex Financial," Arthur said, his voice shaking slightly. "They just suspended our acquisition capital."
Daniel froze. "They did what? We signed the intent letter last week! Apex guaranteed seventy million dollars in liquidity for the expansion!"
"I know, sir," Arthur said, rapidly tapping the screen. "I just got off the phone with their senior vice president. He wouldn't give me a direct reason. He only said that their risk assessment matrix was updated this morning by order of their parent firm."
Vanessa frowned, stepping forward. "Parent firm? Apex is one of the largest private equity lenders in the Midwest. Who owns them?"
Arthur looked up from his tablet, his eyes wide with confusion and sudden realization. "Apex is a subsidiary of Whitmore Capital Europe... which is entirely owned by Whitmore Holdings."
The name hit the room like a physical blow.
Whitmore.
Daniel’s mind spun back three years. A charity gala at the Drake Hotel. A quiet balcony. A stunning woman in a simple blue dress escaping the noise.
“Daniel Cross.” “Claire.” “Just Claire?” “For now.”
The breath caught in Daniel's throat. His knees felt suddenly weak.
Claire Whitmore.
"Daniel? What's wrong with you?" Vanessa asked, noticing the absolute horror dawning on his face. "So a giant conglomerate froze a credit line. My father’s company can bridge the gap! We don't need Whitmore Holdings."
"You don't understand..." Daniel whispered, his voice barely audible. He looked at Vanessa, seeing her diamond bracelet, her expensive perfume, her arrogance—and suddenly, a terrible, crushing reality settled over him.
"What don't I understand?" Vanessa demanded.
"Claire's middle name," Daniel gasped, staring blindly into space. "On our marriage certificate... Claire Elise Whitmore."
Vanessa stopped cold. The smile vanished from her face. "What?"
"She wasn't a middle-class marketing consultant," Daniel said, his voice rising in panic as the pieces of the puzzle crashed together in his mind. "She was Richard Whitmore's daughter. The Whitmore family. The empire that owns the shipping lines, the banks, the tech patents, the real estate... she owned everything."
He grabbed Arthur by the shoulders. "Check the board of directors for Whitmore Holdings! Who is listed as the principal heir?"
Arthur typed frantically on his tablet. A second later, a corporate profile popped up on the screen.
A picture appeared.
It was Claire. But not the Claire Daniel remembered in casual sweaters and soft smiles.
This was Claire Whitmore. Her dark hair was styled in sleek, flawless waves. She wore a tailored charcoal-grey suit, diamond stud earrings, and an expression of absolute, regal authority. Her eyes were sharp, cold, and calculating—the eyes of an apex predator.
Below the photo was her title: Claire E. Whitmore – Executive Vice President and Incoming Managing Director, Whitmore Holdings Group.
"My God..." Arthur whispered. "It's her."
Vanessa stepped back, her face turning ashen. "No... that's impossible. If she had that kind of power, why would she marry an ambitious startup founder? Why wouldn't she tell you?"
"Because I was supposed to love her for her!" Daniel screamed, throwing his hands into the air, tears of frustration and terror finally bursting from his eyes. "And I traded her for you! I traded the heiress to the largest empire in the country—the mother of my children—for a boutique bracelet and a reservation at a restaurant!"
Before Vanessa could respond, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Four men in sharp black suits stepped into the room. Behind them walked a tall, white-haired man carrying a silver-topped walking cane. His presence instantly drained the air from the room.
Richard Whitmore had arrived.
