Chapter 5 - The Shadow of Vanessa Cole

While Daniel was hitting rock bottom in New York, the ripples of Claire’s return were wreaking havoc back in Chicago.
Vanessa Cole stood in her father's mahogany-paneled study, staring at a stack of eviction notices and court summonses spread across the desk. Her father, Thomas Cole, a veteran executive who had always commanded respect in the shipping industry, was sitting in his leather armchair, looking like he had aged twenty years in six months.
"Dad, there has to be a way to contest this!" Vanessa yelled, her voice high and panicked. "Whitmore Holdings can't just seize our port terminals! We have long-term contracts!"
Thomas Cole looked up at his daughter, his eyes filled with bitter anger.
"They aren't seizing them directly, Vanessa," Thomas said, his voice flat and exhausted. "They bought our primary debt from the overseas lenders two weeks ago. They exercised their right to accelerate the loan payments because our quarterly revenue dropped below covenant thresholds. They gave us forty-eight hours to produce thirty-four million dollars."
"Can't we borrow it from another bank?"
"No bank in the Western Hemisphere will lend us a single dollar!" Thomas slammed his hand on the desk. "Richard Whitmore sent a memorandum to every major syndicate last Tuesday! Anyone who helps Cole Logistics will lose their underwriting access to Whitmore port facilities globally! We are blacklisted, Vanessa! Completely blacklisted!"
Vanessa sank into a chair, her face pale. She looked down at her wrist. The diamond bracelet—the one Daniel had bought her on the night Claire went into labor—felt suddenly like a fiery iron shackle around her skin.
"This is all because of that girl..." Vanessa whispered venomously. "Claire. She’s doing this to destroy me because Daniel bought me gifts!"
Thomas looked at his daughter with deep disgust. "No, Vanessa. She isn't doing this because Daniel bought you gifts. She is doing this because you and Daniel flaunted your affair while she was delivering her children alone. You brought the Whitmore family's wrath down on our heads for a stupid fling with a middle-tier tech executive!"
"He promised me he was going to marry me!" Vanessa shrieked. "He said he was leaving her!"
"He was a fool, and you were a bigger fool for believing him!" Thomas stood up, picking up a pen and throwing it at her feet. "I had to file for Chapter 11 restructuring an hour ago. Cole Logistics is done. The board has asked for my resignation, and they have revoked your corporate expense accounts."
Vanessa gasped. "My accounts? What am I supposed to live on?"
"You can sell your jewelry," Thomas said coldly, turning his back to her and looking out the window. "Starting with that bracelet."
Screaming in frustration, Vanessa grabbed her designer handbag and stormed out of the mansion. She got into her convertible sports car and sped off into the afternoon traffic, her mind racing with poison and desperation.
She couldn't accept this. She was Vanessa Cole! She belonged to Chicago's high society. She was supposed to be the wife of a rising superstar, attending galas, appearing on magazine covers. She refused to be dragged down into poverty and shame because of a "quiet marketing girl" who happened to be born rich.
She pulled out her phone and dialed a contact she had swore she would never use again.
"Hello?" a gruff, gravelly voice answered on the third ring.
"It's Vanessa Cole," she said, her voice shaking with desperate rage. "I need you to find out where Claire Whitmore is staying in New York. I want to know everything about her schedule, her security, and where she takes those children."
There was a long pause on the other end of the line. "Miss Cole, tracking a Whitmore is high-risk work. Their private security team, Marcus and his team, are former elite special forces. It'll cost you."
"I don't care how much it costs!" Vanessa hissed, tears of blind rage spilling down her cheeks. "I'll pay you whatever you want. Just find her. If my life is going to be ruined, I'm not going down without making her pay."
"Alright," the voice grunted. "Give me twenty-four hours."

Vanessa hung up the phone, gripping the steering wheel so hard her knuckles turned white. She looked at herself in the rearview mirror—her high-end makeup was smeared, her hair disheveled.
You took my money, my status, and my future, Claire, Vanessa thought dark thoughts as she accelerated down the highway. Let's see how cool and confident you are when you have something real to lose.
