Chapter 3 - The War Begins

rules the room before he even speaks. Richard Whitmore did not need to raise his voice; his presence alone was a physical force.

He walked slowly toward the center of the boardroom, his polished shoes clicking sharply against the marble floor. Behind him, his legal counsel and security detail formed a quiet, imposing wall.

Daniel stood frozen, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Mr... Mr. Whitmore."

Richard stopped five feet away. He did not offer his hand. His cold blue eyes swept over Daniel, analyzing him not as a son-in-law, but as a minor, inconvenient parasite that needed to be exterminated.

"Daniel Cross," Richard said, his tone as smooth and dangerous as ice. "I believe this is the first time we've spoken since you asked for my daughter's hand in marriage three years ago. Do you remember what I told you that day?"

Daniel swallowed hard, his throat bone-dry. "You... you said people should be judged by what they do when loving someone becomes inconvenient."

"Precisely," Richard replied softly. "And when my daughter was lying in a hospital bed, bleeding and crying out your name while bringing two new lives into this world... loving her became inconvenient for you, didn't it? A bottle of Chateau Margaux and Miss Cole's company seemed far more pressing."

Vanessa took a step forward, trying to maintain her composure. "Mr. Whitmore, this is a private corporate matter between Cross Industries and Cole Logistics. You have no legal right to step into this boardroom and—"

Richard did not even turn his head to look at her. He simply raised one finger, silencing her instantly.

"Miss Cole," Richard said dryly. "Your father’s firm, Cole Logistics, currently owes thirty-four million dollars to Global Marine Transport for port access in Long Beach. Global Marine is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Whitmore Energy. If you speak to me again, I will cancel your father’s port privileges by twelve o'clock today, and your family will be in bankruptcy court before the weekend."

Vanessa’s mouth snapped shut. She turned pale, instinctively pulling her hand back and hiding her diamond-adorned wrist behind her back.

Daniel stepped between Richard and Vanessa, trying desperately to piece together his scattered authority. "Mr. Whitmore, please. I made a mistake. A terrible, unforgivable mistake. I was blind, I was stupid! But Claire is my wife. Those are my children! Let me see her. Let me talk to her! I can fix this!"

Richard let out a soft, dark chuckle that sent a chill straight down Daniel's spine.

"Fix it?" Richard asked, stepping closer until he was mere inches from Daniel’s face. "You cannot fix a shattered mirror, Daniel. You can only cut yourself trying to put the pieces back together."

Richard reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a sleek silver flash drive, placing it gently on the glass boardroom table.

"What is this?" Daniel asked timidly.

"That is the record of your hubris," Richard explained. "It contains every financial transaction, every shell company transfer, and every insider trading draft you’ve executed over the last eighteen months trying to pump up Cross Industries’ valuation before your merger. Did you really think you were clever, Daniel? My daughter knew about your accounting irregularities six months ago. She protected you. She covered your tracks using her own personal funds because she believed you were a good man who was simply under pressure."

Daniel stared at the flash drive as if it were a coiled cobra.

"She shielded you from the federal regulators," Richard continued, his voice dropping to a low whisper. "She shielded you from me. But now... the shield is gone."

"What do you want?" Daniel whispered, feeling the floor slipping out from beneath him.

"I want nothing from you," Richard said, turning his back on Daniel and heading toward the door. "My daughter, however, wants complete restitution. You have twenty-four hours to sign the unconditional surrender of your parental rights and sign the divorce decree. If you do, Whitmore Holdings will simply allow Cross Industries to collapse naturally under its own debt."

"And if I refuse?" Daniel shouted, a sudden desperate rage bubbling up inside him. "I have rights! I am their father! I will take her to court! I will drag the Whitmore name through every tabloid in the country!"

Richard stopped at the doorway. He turned his head slightly, looking at Daniel over his shoulder with a look of pure, unadulterated pity.

"Then my daughter will execute Phase Two," Richard said simply. "And God have mercy on your soul, because Claire won't."

With a wave of his hand, Richard and his entourage exited the room, leaving the heavy oak doors open behind them.

The boardroom was dead silent.

Daniel fell back into his leather chair, staring at the ceiling. The empire he had spent ten years trying to build was crumbling around him, brick by brick.

Vanessa stood nearby, looking at him not with love or admiration, but with cold, sudden realization. She realized that Daniel Cross was no longer a rising CEO star. He was a dead man walking.

"Daniel..." she began quietly.

"Get out," Daniel said, his voice completely dead.

"Daniel, we need to talk about the merger—"

"I SAID GET OUT!" Daniel roared, throwing his coffee cup against the glass window, where it shattered into a hundred jagged pieces.

Vanessa flinched, then turned without another word and hurried out of the room, her heels clicking rapidly against the floor.

Left completely alone in his giant tower, Daniel picked up the silver flash drive. His hands shook uncontrollably. He plugged it into his laptop.

A single video file sat in the folder. He double-clicked it.

The screen lit up. It wasn't financial documents.

It was a recording taken from a security camera inside the luxury boutique three weeks ago. The video showed Daniel standing near the display case, laughing as he slid the diamond bracelet onto Vanessa’s wrist, kissing her cheek while she giggled.

The timestamp in the bottom right corner read: 10:42 PM.

Daniel remembered that exact time. That was the precise moment his phone had chimed with a text from the hospital nurse, telling him that Claire was four centimeters dilated and asking him to hurry.

He had silenced the phone and put it back in his pocket.

Daniel sank into his seat, burying his face in his hands, and finally began to weep.
