Chapter 6 - A Brand New Partnership

The local Austin business journals had a field day later that week. The headlines didn't just mention the high-society wedding disaster; they focused on the sudden collapse of Hawthorne Architecture and the impending criminal charges against its founder.
I sat in a high-end restaurant in downtown Austin, sharing a celebratory dinner with Megan and her father, Robert Vance. Robert was a self-made real estate mogul, a man with silver hair and an imposing presence, but his eyes were warm when he looked at me.
"Claire," Robert said, raising his glass of scotch. "I’ve been in business in this state for forty years, and I’ve never seen anyone pull off a counter-attack as clean and precise as what you did to your family last week. You saved my daughter from a lifetime of manipulation."
"I just wanted the truth to out, Mr. Vance," I said, clinking my glass against his. "I loved my family, but they mistook my generosity for weakness. They thought they could erase me from their lives while living off my hard work."
"Well, they learned their lesson the hard way," Megan smiled, looking happier and more relaxed than I had ever seen her. "But now, let’s talk about the future. Dad, show her."
Robert set a thick folder on the table. It was a prospectus for a brand new real estate investment firm.
"My company is launching a new commercial development project in North Austin," Robert explained. "We need a chief financial officer and a principal partner to manage the acquisition portfolio. Someone with absolute financial integrity, an eye for forensic analysis, and the guts to make tough decisions. I want you, Claire. And I’m prepared to offer you a thirty percent equity stake in the entire project, completely vested from day one."
I looked at the numbers on the page. The project was valued at over thirty million dollars. The equity alone would make me more successful than my father could have ever dreamed of being in his entire lifetime.
"And what about Megan?" I asked, looking at her.

"I’m going to be the lead design coordinator," Megan said proudly. "I have a degree in interior architecture that Ryan always told me was 'useless' because he wanted me to just be a housewife. But my dad and I are turning over a new leaf. We want to build something real. With you."
"To new beginnings," I said, a wave of profound relief washing over me. I had lost a toxic family, but I had gained an incredible future.
