Chapter 3 - The Luxury Facade Crumbles

The next morning, the state of Texas felt a little colder for the Hawthorne family.
At 7:00 a.m., Ryan arrived at his downtown condo after a sleepless night, only to find two burly locksmiths changing the deadbolts. Standing beside them was my personal assistant, Marcus, holding a stack of legal documents.
"What is the meaning of this?" Ryan shouted, trying to push past Marcus. "This is my apartment! My name is on the mailbox!"
"Your name is on the mailbox, Mr. Hawthorne, but Claire’s holding company owns the deed," Marcus said calmly, handing him a formal three-day notice to quit. "Since there is no legal lease agreement between you and the holding company, and you have failed to pay the agreed-upon 'zero-dollar' rent, your corporate tenancy has been revoked. You may retrieve your personal belongings today, provided an escort is present."
Ryan pulled out his phone to call me, but his screen flashed with a bright red notification from his banking app: Authorized User Account Suspended.
He couldn't even call an Uber. The black Amex card I had given him for "emergency business expenses"—which he had been using to buy $200 dinners and designer clothes to impress Megan’s high-society friends—was completely dead.
Meanwhile, across town at my parents' suburban home, another bomb dropped.
My father’s phone rang. It was the president of the local bank where my father had secured his business line of credit for his architectural consulting firm.
"Richard," the banker said, his tone professional but entirely devoid of the warmth he usually showed. "We’ve just received an asset allocation update from your primary guarantor, Claire Hawthorne. She has officially withdrawn her personal capital as backing for your commercial credit line."
My father gripped the phone, his heart hammering against his ribs. "What? She can't do that without a ninety-day notice!"
"Actually, she can," the banker replied. "Per the clause signed three years ago, if the business fails to maintain a positive debt-to-equity ratio—which it hasn't, due to the large cash withdrawals you made to fund your son's lifestyle—the guarantor has the right to withdraw immediately to protect her assets. Richard, without her backing, your firm is in technical default. We’re going to have to freeze your operating accounts by noon."
Within four hours, the entire luxury facade my family had built using my hard work and financial success evaporated. They weren't wealthy. They were parasites whose host had just walked away.

At 1:00 p.m., my phone buzzed. It was a text message from an unknown number.
Claire, it’s Megan. Can we meet for coffee? I think you and I have a lot more to talk about.
