Chapter 5 - Blood Money and Bank Accounts

By Monday morning, Ryan was officially living out of a cheap motel on the outskirts of Austin, surrounded by cardboard boxes of his designer clothes and golf clubs. He spent his days desperately calling anyone who might lend him money, but the country club crowd had completely ostracized him. Nobody wanted to be associated with a guy who got dumped by his bride at his own wedding because his sister repossessed his house.

But the real drama was unfolding at my parents' house.

My father was frantic, pacing the floor of his living room while my mother wept on the sofa. The bank had officially locked their business accounts, meaning he couldn't pay his staff or his suppliers.

The front door bell rang. My father rushed to open it, hoping it was a courier with a loan approval notice.

Instead, it was a process server.

"Richard Hawthorne?" the man asked.

"Yes?"

"You've been served." The man handed him a thick stack of legal papers and walked away.

My father opened the envelope, his hands shaking. It wasn't a standard lawsuit. It was an immediate eviction notice from Vanguard Property Management—the company owned by Megan’s father—demanding that Hawthorne Architecture vacate their commercial offices within seven days due to non-payment of rent and material breach of lease terms.

Attached to the eviction notice was a second document: a civil lawsuit filed by me, Claire Hawthorne.

I was suing my father and my brother for grand larceny and fraudulent misrepresentation. During my audit over the weekend, I had discovered that six months ago, my father had forged my signature on a corporate guarantee document to secure a $150,000 business loan from a private lender. He had used that money to pay the deposit on Ryan's wedding venue and buy my mother a new diamond necklace for the ceremony.

The phone in my father’s hand began to ring. It was Ryan.

"Dad!" Ryan panicked into the receiver. "The police just showed up at my motel. They’re asking about a corporate account under Claire's company name. They said there’s a warrant being issued for identity theft!"

My father collapsed into an armchair, the legal papers slipping from his fingers onto the rug. "She found the signature," he whispered, his voice completely hollow.

"What?" Ryan screamed. "Dad, what did you do?"

"I tried to save us, Ryan," my father said, staring blankly at the wall. "I tried to buy us time until you married Megan. But Claire... Claire just took away our entire world."
