Chapter 9 - THE CLEAN SWEEP

Two weeks later, the final chapter of the Romano empire was officially written in the Federal Courthouse of Downtown Boston.

Vincent Romano, facing sixty-eight counts of federal racketeering, corporate extortion, and illegal pharmaceutical counterfeiting, entered a full guilty plea in exchange for a thirty-year sentence at a maximum-security prison in Colorado. His entire fortune—over one hundred and fifty million dollars in illegal assets—was seized by the United States government.

Dante Romano was sentenced to fifteen years for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and federal witness intimidation. His tears on the courtroom floor were broadcast live across every news outlet in the state.

Through an emergency federal restitution decree, fifty million dollars of the seized Romano fortune was officially transferred directly to Boston General Hospital.

The funds were used to build a brand-new, state-of-the-art trauma facility: The Carter-Vance Trauma & Emergency Care Center.

On a bright, sunny Monday morning, the official grand opening of the new wing took place in front of the hospital's main entrance.

Hundreds of doctors, nurses, city officials, and former patients gathered around the ribbon-cutting stage. Among them was the fourteen-year-old boy from the highway collision—now fully recovered, smiling brightly alongside his tearful mother.

Dr. Marcus Vance stood at the podium, smiling warmly at the cheering crowd.

"Six weeks ago," Dr. Vance spoke into the microphone, his voice thick with emotion, "this hospital faced a moment of absolute dark terror. We were reminded of how fragile safety can be when confronted by lawless power. But we were also reminded of something far greater..."

He turned, gesturing toward Evelyn, who stood beside me wearing a sharp white doctor's coat over her scrubs.

"We were reminded that real power doesn't come from guns, money, or fear," Vance continued, his voice echoing across the plaza. "Real power comes from the unshakeable courage of those who dedicate their lives to protecting others. Ladies and gentlemen, our Director of Trauma Services: Dr. Evelyn Carter!"

The crowd erupted into a roaring standing ovation.

Evelyn stepped up to the microphone, her calm green eyes taking in the happy, cheering faces of the staff, the patients, and the community she had fought so hard to protect.

She looked at me, offering a warm, genuine smile—the first true smile I had seen on her face since the night Dante Romano walked through those doors.

"Thank you," Evelyn said softly into the microphone. "Now... let's get back to work. We have lives to save."
