Chapter 7 - THE CRUMBLING EMPIRE

By sunrise, the story had completely captured every major television news network in the nation.

Live broadcast helicopters circled above the Romano Estate as federal agents marched out carrying dozens of boxes filled with seized documents, hard drives, and gold bullion. Headlines across CNN, Bloomberg, and The Boston Globe read:

MASSIVE RICO SWEEP: MOB BOSS VINCENT ROMANO AND SON ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION MEDICAL FRAUD BUST.

Inside Boston General Hospital, the atmosphere had transformed overnight.

The corporate board members who had been ready to fire Evelyn twenty-four hours ago were now huddled nervously in the executive conference room, desperately attempting to issue press statements praising Dr. Evelyn Carter for her "heroic integrity and dedication to public health."

At 10:00 AM, Evelyn and I walked through the main sliding doors of the ER.

The entire department went dead silent.

Nurses, resident doctors, orderlies, and even administrative clerks stood up from their desks. Then, slowly, one person began to clap. Within three seconds, the entire trauma center erupted into a roaring, thunderous standing ovation.

Dr. Marcus Vance walked up to us, his eyes red from crying, holding two large cups of coffee. He handed one to Evelyn, his hands trembling—this time not from fear, but from profound emotional relief.

"Evelyn..." Vance stammered, tears streaming down his cheeks. "The board... they just fired the entire procurement committee. They appointed you as the Interim Director of Surgical Services."

Evelyn smiled gently, setting the coffee down. "I don't want to be Director, Marcus. I just want to be a surgeon. Is Bay 3 open?"

"Bay 3 is always open for you, Dr. Carter," Vance said, wiping his eyes with a smile.

However, the war was not completely over.

While Vincent Romano was held without bail in a high-security federal detention center, his legal team was frantically pouring millions into desperate counter-measures. And Dante Romano, released on a temporary two-million-dollar medical bail due to his facial injuries, was roaming the city like a wounded, rabid animal.

That afternoon, while I was organizing medical supplies in the basement storage room, the lights suddenly flickered and died.

The heavy steel door behind me clicked shut with a sharp, mechanical lock.

I turned around, my heart leaping into my throat.

Standing in the dim emergency light, holding a heavy tactical knife, was Dante Romano.
