Chapter 8 - THE CORNERED RAT

Dante looked unhinged. His designer suit was wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot and wild, his face swollen around the white surgical bandages. He had lost everything—his family's wealth, his social standing, his father's empire—all because of one night in an emergency room.

"You..." Dante rasped, his voice trembling with psychotic rage. "It was you and that bitch doctor. You ruined my life."

I backed away slowly, my hands reaching behind my back, touching the edge of a heavy stainless-steel supply shelf. "Dante, put the knife down. The entire building is crawling with federal marshals. You won't make it out of the basement."

"I don't care about making it out!" Dante screamed, lunging forward, slashing the air wildly with the blade. "My father is going to die in prison! Our money is frozen! I'm going to make that doctor watch you bleed out on this dirty floor!"

I ducked behind a tall rolling supply cart, sending a stack of metal trays crashing onto the floor with a deafening CLATTER.

"Evelyn!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. "EVELYN!"

Dante kicked the supply cart aside, his face contorted in psychotic rage, grabbing me by the collar of my scrubs and pressing the cold blade against my throat. "Scream all you want! Nobody can hear you down here!"

BOOM!

The heavy steel basement door was kicked off its hinges with incredible concussive force, crashing onto the concrete floor.

Evelyn stood in the doorway. She wasn't wearing scrubs. She held a heavy steel IV pole in her hands like a tactical quarterstaff, her eyes burning with lethal military precision.

"Let her go, Dante," Evelyn commanded, her voice dropping into a register that made the room freeze.

Dante pulled me tighter against his chest, pressing the blade deeper until a tiny drop of blood trickled down my neck. "Step back, bitch! Or I cut her throat right now!"

Evelyn didn't step back. She took one step forward, her posture perfectly balanced.

"You have five seconds to drop that blade, Dante," Evelyn said calmly. "One..."

"I'll kill her!" Dante shrieked, his hand trembling violently.

"Two..."

Dante shifted his weight to thrust the knife—and in that fraction of a second, Evelyn struck.

She crossed the ten-foot distance in a blur of terrifying speed. The heavy steel IV pole swung through the air with precise military force, striking Dante's wrist with a sickening CRACK!

Dante shrieked in agony as the knife flew from his shattered hand, bouncing across the floor. Before he could fall, Evelyn thrust the butt of the steel pole directly into his sternum, knocking the breath completely out of his lungs.

He crashed onto his back, gasping for air, clutching his broken wrist.

Evelyn stepped over him, placed her heavy boot firmly onto his throat, pressing just enough weight to keep him pinned to the concrete floor.

She leaned down, looking directly into his terrified, sobbing eyes.

"I told you last night, Dante," Evelyn whispered, her voice cool and lethal. "You don't own this hospital. And you never, ever touch my nurses."

Federal Marshals flooded through the broken doorway seconds later, pinning Dante to the floor and dragging him away in heavy iron chains as he wept like a frightened child.
