Chapter 10 - THE HAVEN (EPILOGUE)

One year later.

A warm, golden autumn breeze rustled through the trees of Boston's Public Garden.

The new Carter-Vance Trauma Center was operating like a flawless, well-oiled machine. Counterfeit supplies were a thing of the past, staff morale was at an all-time high, and the hospital had been ranked as the top emergency care facility in the North East.

I sat on a wooden park bench near the pond, enjoying a warm cup of coffee during a afternoon shift break.

A quiet footstep sounded behind me.

Evelyn walked up, wearing a comfortable wool sweater and jeans, carrying two fresh blueberry muffins. She sat down beside me on the bench, leaning back and watching the swans glide across the water.

"How is the ICU looking today?" I asked, taking a muffin.

"Quiet," Evelyn smiled peacefully. "The new pediatric trauma bay just opened this morning. We treated three minor fracture cases and sent them all home with ice cream."

I chuckled, taking a sip of my coffee. "A bit different from Fallujah, isn't it?"

Evelyn looked up at the clear blue sky, letting out a long, contented breath.

"It's better," she said softly. "In the military, you fight to survive the day. Here... we fight so that people can have a tomorrow."

She looked at me, her eyes filled with deep warmth and unshakeable friendship.

"I never thanked you properly, Claire," Evelyn murmured. "For standing by my side in Bay 3 that night. Most people would have run."

"Nurses don't run, Evelyn," I smiled, clinking my coffee cup against hers. "Especially not when we have a captain like you leading the team."

We sat together in peaceful silence as the golden leaves fell gently around us, the sounds of a safe, thriving city echoing in the distance.

The chaos was gone. The shadows had cleared. And in the heart of the city, a sanctuary of hope stood tall, built by the quiet courage of a doctor who refused to bow to fear.
