Chapter 8 - Judgment and Restitution

The jury deliberated for less than two hours. In a trial filled with overwhelming forensic evidence, financial records, and audio recordings, the verdict was a foregone conclusion.

"On the count of grand larceny, how do you find the defendant, Maris Williams?" the judge asked.

"Guilty," the jury foreman replied.

"On the count of bank fraud and extortion?"

"Guilty."

"On the count of identity theft and conspiracy to suppress a legal document?"

"Guilty."

Maris Williams closed her eyes as the word guilty was repeated over and over, striking her like physical blows. Arthur Vance received the same fate.

The judge adjusted his glasses and looked down at Maris with a severe, uncompromising gaze. "Maris Williams, your actions represent the worst of human nature. Out of sheer greed and malice, you tore apart a young family, stole millions from your own son, and condemned your daughter-in-law and granddaughter to a life of extreme hardship while you lived in absolute luxury. The law will show you the same mercy you showed them."

The sentence was handed down: twenty-two years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary for Maris Williams, with no possibility of parole for the first fifteen years. All her remaining global assets were officially liquidated and ordered to be paid as direct financial restitution to Catherine Williams.

As Maris was led away by the guards, she stopped by Victor's row. She looked at him with pleading eyes, tears finally streaming down her face. "Victor... please. Don't let them do this to me. I'm your mother. You can't let me die in a cell."

Victor looked at her, his face completely devoid of hatred, filled only with a profound, final pity. "Goodbye, Maris. I hope you find the peace in prison that you denied to my family."

He didn't wait to see her reaction. He turned to Catherine, taking her hand, and together they walked out of the courtroom. As they exited the building, the wall of reporters erupted with questions and flashing lights, but Victor put his arm around his wife, ignoring the noise, and walked down the steps toward their car.

Inside the SUV, Julian handed Catherine a leather-bound folder. "Mrs. Williams... or rather, Madam Chairperson. With the suppression of the original will officially overturned by the federal court, you are now the legal owner of fifty percent of the voting shares of Williams Enterprises. Combined with Victor's thirty percent, you both hold absolute, unchallengeable control of the entire conglomerate."

Catherine looked at the documents, then at Victor. "What do we do now?"

Victor smiled, kissing her knuckles. "Whatever you want, Cathy. The company is yours. Let's use it to do some good."
