Chapter 7 - The Trial and Secrets Unearthed

The trial of Maris Williams and Arthur Vance became the trial of the decade. The courthouse was surrounded by media vans, journalists, and curious onlookers eager to see the fall of high-society royalty.
Inside the courtroom, Victor sat in the front row, his arm firmly around Catherine. Annie was kept at home under the care of Brian, spared from the toxic environment.
Maris sat at the defense table, looking significantly aged. Deprived of her luxury spa treatments, her designer clothes, and her expensive jewelry, she looked human for the first time—and vulnerable. Yet, her eyes still flared with venom whenever she looked toward Victor and Catherine.
Julian Vance, acting as the special prosecutor's lead financial consultant, stood before the judge. "Your Honor, we submit into evidence Exhibit D: the encrypted hard drive recovered from Arthur Vance's private safe. This drive contains not only the forged divorce documents and wire transfer logs but also a series of emails dating back four years."
The defense attorney stood up. "Objection, Your Honor! The contents of those emails have not been fully verified for chain of custody."
"Objection overruled," the judge stated firmly. "Proceed, Mr. Vance."
Julian clicked a remote, and a series of emails appeared on the large monitors in the courtroom. As Victor read the text, his breath hitched. The emails weren't just about the divorce. They dated back to before his father's death.
"As the court can see," Julian announced, his voice echoing in the silent room, "Maris Williams did not just orchestrate the separation of Victor and Catherine Williams. Four years ago, she discovered that her late husband, Harold Williams, had left fifty percent of the primary voting shares of Williams Enterprises directly to Catherine in a secret codicil to his will. Harold knew his wife’s greed and wanted to ensure the company remained grounded through Catherine’s integrity."
A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom.
Victor turned to Catherine, who looked completely bewildered. "I... I didn't know," she whispered to Victor. "Grandpa Harold never told me about any shares."
"He didn't have the chance to," Julian explained to the court. "Before the codicil could be executed, Harold Williams passed away suddenly from what was ruled a heart attack. Maris Williams, with the help of Arthur Vance, suppressed the codicil, forged a new will leaving everything to herself and Victor, and then systematically targeted Catherine to eliminate her from the family entirely. The threat of embezzlement against Catherine's father was entirely fabricated because they knew if Catherine ever looked into the estate's finances, the true will would be discovered."
Victor felt a cold fury wash over him. His mother hadn't just broken up his marriage out of snobbery; she had done it out of pure, unadulterated corporate greed. She had defrauded Catherine out of her rightful inheritance and let her rot in poverty to protect her own stolen empire.
Victor stood up from his seat, ignoring the courtroom protocol, and walked directly to the defense table. The bailiffs stepped forward, but Victor stopped a foot away from his mother, looking down at her.
"You didn't just steal my wife and daughter, Maris," Victor said, his voice cutting through the room like a razor. "You stole my father's final wishes. You let his legacy be built on a foundation of theft and misery."
Maris looked up at him, her lips trembling, her composure finally breaking. "Victor... I did it to keep the company in the family... Catherine would have given it away to charities... she didn't understand the market..."

"She understood honor," Victor said coldly. "Something you will have the next twenty years to think about."
The judge banged his gavel, ordering Victor to return to his seat, but the damage was done. The truth was out in the open, raw and undeniable.
