Chapter 6 - A New Beginning

Two weeks had passed since the arrest of Maris Williams. The scandal had dominated the business sections of every major newspaper, but inside the private villa Victor had rented on the outskirts of the city, the noise of the world didn't exist.
Catherine had been discharged from the hospital. She was still frail, but her appetite had returned, and her laughter, a sound Victor hadn't heard in three agonizing years, was slowly filling the rooms again.
It was a beautiful sunny afternoon. Victor stood on the terrace, watching Annie play in the garden with a golden retriever puppy he had bought her the day before. The little girl was wearing a beautiful yellow sundress, her hair neatly braided, her cheeks plump and rosy. She looked like a completely different child from the one who had been digging through the trash at the Grand Oak Plaza.
Catherine walked out onto the terrace, wrapping a light shawl around her shoulders. Victor immediately stepped over, putting his arm around her waist and pulling her close, shielding her from the gentle breeze.
"You should be resting, Cathy," he said softly, using the nickname he hadn't used in years.
"I’ve rested enough in that hospital bed, Victor," she said, leaning her head against his shoulder. "Just watching her play... it feels like a dream. I keep waking up in the middle of the night terrified that I’m still in that room in Northside, that I have to wake up at 4:00 AM to catch the bus to the garment factory."
Victor squeezed her hand tightly. "That nightmare is over, Catherine. I swear to you, for the rest of my life, I will spend every day making up for the time we lost. I’ve stepped down as the active CEO of Williams Enterprises. I’ve appointed a professional board to run the day-to-day operations."
Catherine looked up at him, surprised. "You stepped down? But that company was your life, Victor. You worked eighty hours a week for it."
"No," Victor said, looking her dead in the eye. "I worked eighty hours a week because I was trying to numb the pain of losing you. I thought if I accumulated enough wealth, the emptiness inside me would disappear. But it didn't. You and Annie are my life. I don't need an empire. I just need you."
Catherine’s eyes welled with tears. She reached up, her fingers tracing the jawline of the man she had loved since they were teenagers. "I never stopped loving you, Victor. Even when I read those fake letters, even when your mother told me you had forgotten about us... in my heart, I knew the Victor I married wouldn't do that. I held onto that memory to survive."
They kissed—a slow, tender reconnection that washed away three years of bitter separation, pain, and deceit.
Down in the garden, Annie looked up and saw her parents holding each other. She let out a joyful giggle, letting go of the puppy's leash as she ran up the terrace stairs, throwing herself into their legs.

"Group hug!" Annie cheered.
Victor laughed, scooping both his wife and daughter into his arms, holding them tightly against his chest. The family was finally whole again, but the road to full healing was just beginning.
