Chapter 10 - The Bench by the Sea

The Seattle waterfront at dusk was breathtaking.
The glass towers caught the last golden rays of the setting sun, turning the city into a sparkling kingdom of warm amber and deep gold.
Sitting on the exact wooden public bench where Callum had found them seven months ago were Juny and Tess.
They were no longer wearing faded denim jackets or looking at the world with tired, frightened eyes. They wore bright yellow spring dresses, their hair tied neatly with matching yellow ribbons.
They were laughing—a bright, beautiful, musical sound—as they fed breadcrumbs to a flock of seagulls gathering on the walkway. Beside them on the bench sat two brand-new, small lavender suitcases, filled not with emergency supplies, but with toys, drawing pads, and books for their upcoming weekend trip.
Callum and Sarah walked slowly down the stone walkway toward them, hand in hand.
Juny spotted them first. "Mommy! Callum!"
The twin six-year-olds jumped off the bench, running down the walkway, their bright yellow dresses fluttering in the sea breeze.
Callum dropped to one knee just as he had done on that cold Monday evening months ago.
Tess threw her arms around his neck, while Juny wrapped her arms around Sarah’s waist. Callum lifted Tess up effortlessly, setting her on his shoulder, making her giggle with delight as she held onto his dark hair.
Sarah walked over to the bench, touching the smooth wooden slats where her daughters had sat in silence, waiting for a promise that had almost cost them everything.
She looked at the small brass plaque that Callum had secretly commissioned and installed on the side of the bench three weeks ago.
It read:
"TO JUNY AND TESS — HELD BY SILENCE, SAVED BY LOVE. NOVEMBER 2025."
Sarah touched the silver letters gently, tears of pure, profound happiness welling in her dark eyes.
"It’s beautiful, Callum," Sarah whispered softly, turning to face him.
Callum set Tess gently down beside her sister. He stepped closer to Sarah, reaching out to gently take her warm hand in his.
Three months ago, Sarah had been appointed as the new Chief Financial Officer of Pierce Global, rebuilding the company’s ethical foundations from the ground up. But more than business partners, over the long winter months in Idaho and Seattle, something far deeper, warmer, and unshakeable had blossomed between them.
A love built not on shallow promises, but on shared courage, sacrifice, and absolute trust.
Callum reached into his jacket pocket. He pulled out a small, velvet-lined box.
Juny and Tess gasped, clapping their small hands over their mouths in wild, hysterical excitement.
"Is he doing it?!" Tess whispered loudly to her sister. "He's doing it!"
Callum dropped down on one knee on the quiet waterfront walkway, looking up into Sarah’s radiant, beautiful face.
"Sarah," Callum said, his deep voice rich with emotion. "Seven months ago, I walked down this path thinking I had everything a man could ever want. But when I saw your daughters sitting on this bench, I realized my life was completely empty."
He opened the small box, revealing a breathtaking solitaire diamond ring that caught the golden light of the setting sun.
"You and your girls gave me a family," Callum said gently. "You gave me a home. Sarah Vance, will you marry me and let me protect you and our daughters for the rest of my life?"
Sarah covered her face with her hands, a joyful sob escaping her lips as tears of pure happiness spilled down her cheeks.
She looked down at her two little girls, who were nodding their heads frantically with massive, toothy grins.
"Yes!" Sarah cried out, stepping forward and kneeling down on the pavement beside him. "Yes, Callum! A thousand times yes!"
Callum slipped the diamond ring onto her finger, pulling her into a deep, passionate embrace as the golden light of the sunset wrapped around them.
Juny and Tess cheered, throwing their arms around both of them, piling onto the pavement in a warm, chaotic knot of laughter, hugs, and pure, radiant love.
Callum held his new family tight against his chest, looking out over the calm, golden waters of Puget Sound.
