Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Marcus Thorne

By 2:00 AM, the top floor of the Pierce Global Building in downtown Seattle was dark, save for the blue glow of monitors inside Callum Pierce’s private office.
Gabriel Vance—a former Delta Force operator and Callum’s head of security for eight years—stood behind the glass desk, reviewing the contents of the silver USB drive on an air-gapped, encrypted laptop.
Standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the rain-drenched city, was Callum.
Back at the penthouse, Elena and two elite, vetted female security guards were staying with Juny and Tess in a secured interior suite. The children were fast asleep, tucked under silk blankets, their lavender suitcases sitting at the foot of their bed.
"It's all here, Callum," Gabriel said, his voice gravelly and grim. "Sarah Vance’s forensic audit is flawless. Marcus Thorne has been using Pierce Global’s heavy freight lines out of Tacoma to ship untraceable physical assets for the Kray Syndicate. He’s laundered eighty-four million dollars over four years."
"And Sarah?" Callum asked, not turning around.
Gabriel paused, his dark brows furrowing. "I ran her plate through our private traffic cameras. Her sedan was spotted near the industrial docks at 11:40 PM last night. Two dark SUVs boxed her in. The vehicle was found abandoned two hours ago near Pier 91. Blood traces on the driver's seat. No body."
Callum’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth groaned. "She surrendered herself to draw them away from the bench."
"She knew Thorne’s men were sweeping her apartment," Gabriel said. "She knew if she stayed with the girls, all three of them would end up in a shipping container in the Pacific. Leaving them on that waterfront was a mathematical gamble to save their lives."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the executive floor clicked open.
A tall, impeccably dressed man in a tailored charcoal suit walked into the dark office. He was forty-two, with silvering hair, sharp blue eyes, and an easy, aristocratic smile that had charmed investors from Tokyo to London.
It was Marcus Thorne.
"Callum?" Marcus said, stepping into the room, holding an iPad in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other. "What are you doing here at two in the morning? Security said you brought Gabriel’s team onto the executive floor."
Callum turned slowly to face his COO. The silence in the room became so heavy that even the hum of the air conditioning seemed to die away.
Callum didn't speak. He simply stood with his hands in his pockets, watching Marcus with stone-cold, unreadable eyes.
Marcus’s smile flickered slightly. He looked at Gabriel, then looked at the air-gapped laptop on the desk.
"Is something wrong?" Marcus asked, his tone smooth, almost conversational. "Did the Asian markets crash?"
"Sarah Vance," Callum said flatly.
The name hung in the air like a drop of poison.
Marcus didn't flinch. He was too professional, too seasoned in corporate warfare to break instantly. He took a slow sip of his coffee, tilting his head with mild, professional confusion.
"Sarah Vance? The forensic accountant from regional finance?" Marcus asked. "She went AWOL three days ago. Human resources flagged her for unexcused absences. We were preparing to terminate her contract."
"She didn't go AWOL, Marcus," Callum said, taking three slow steps toward his friend. "She was running from you."
Marcus’s blue eyes narrowed slightly. The friendly mask began to slip, revealing the cold, reptilian ambition underneath.
"Callum, I don't know what kind of paranoid nonsense she sent you—"
"I have the silver drive, Marcus," Callum interrupted softly.
Marcus froze. His hand holding the coffee cup remained completely still in mid-air.
"I have the ledgers," Callum continued, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I have the offshore routing codes to the Kray accounts in Panama. I have the shipping manifests from Pier 91. And most importantly... I have her twin daughters."
The color drained slowly from Marcus Thorne’s face. The charming executive vanished, replaced by a man backed into a corner.
"You shouldn't have gotten involved in this, Callum," Marcus whispered, his voice dropping all pretense. "You're a brilliant CEO, but you live in a world of numbers and boardrooms. You don't understand the people I work for. Victor Kray isn't an investor you can buy out. He owns politicians, judges, and federal marshals."
"Where is Sarah?" Callum demanded, taking another step forward, his broad frame towering over Thorne.
Marcus let out a bitter, quiet chuckle. "If she's lucky? Dead. If she's unlucky? She's on a cargo vessel heading for international waters. She took something that belonged to Kray."
"Where is the ship?" Callum barked, his voice booming through the glass office like thunder.
Marcus set his coffee cup down on the desk with a heavy clack. He reached into his coat pocket, not for a gun, but for his phone.
"It doesn't matter where the ship is, Callum," Marcus said, his eyes flashing with lethal arrogance. "Because within thirty minutes, King County Child Protective Services, accompanied by six armed state troopers, will arrive at your penthouse with a emergency warrant. I filed an anonymous tip that you kidnapped two minor children from the waterfront."
Callum’s eyes narrowed into slits of liquid steel.
"You think a state judge can take them from me?" Callum asked quietly.
"I know she can," Marcus smirked. "Judge Brenda Miller signed the custody extraction order twenty minutes ago. The moment those girls enter state custody, they vanish into Kray’s private system. You have thirty minutes to give me the silver drive, Callum. Or those little girls pay for your mother's employee's mistakes."
Callum looked at Marcus for three long seconds. Then, to Marcus’s complete shock, Callum smiled—a dark, ruthless grin that Marcus had never seen in fifteen years of business.
"Gabriel," Callum said, not taking his eyes off Marcus.
"Yes, Boss?"
"Lock Mr. Thorne in the high-security vault on floor thirty-seven. Strip him of his phones, his watch, and his shoes."

Marcus gasped, stepping back in shock. "You can't false-imprison me! I'm the COO of a fortune-five-hundred company!"
"I own the company, Marcus," Callum whispered, leaning down until his face was inches from Thorne’s. "And as of right now, I am using every penny of my fortune to destroy you."
