Chapter 8 - The Return to the Ridge

The morning sun over the Idaho mountains rose in a brilliant, clear sky of sapphire blue and blinding white snow.
At The Ridge, the great river-rock fireplace was roaring with warm flames.
In the center of the Great Room, sitting on the plush sheepskin rug, Juny and Tess were sitting silently, their eyes fixed on the grand glass front doors overlooking the helipad.
They had been sitting there since dawn, refusing to eat, refusing to color, holding their small brass key and their stuffed bear.
Elena sat nearby, watching them with tears in her eyes, praying silently.
Suddenly, the deep, thunderous beat of helicopter blades echoed across the snow-covered valley.
THUMP-THUMP-THUMP-THUMP.
Tess dropped her crayon. Juny stood up instantly.
"It’s him!" Tess gasped.
They ran across the sheepskin rug, pressing their tiny faces against the cold glass windows.
Outside, the sleek black Sikorsky helicopter touched down on the snow-covered landing pad, blowing clouds of powdery white snow into the air.
The side door clicked open.
Gabriel stepped out first, securing the area. Then, Callum stepped out into the crisp mountain air.
He reached back into the cabin, holding the hand of a woman wrapped in a thick white wool coat, helping her carefully down onto the snow. Her face was bruised, her hair soft, but as she stepped onto the snow, her eyes locked onto the glass windows of the estate.
"Mommy!" Tess screamed inside the room, her small voice breaking through the heavy silence.
"MOMMY!" Juny shouted.
The two little girls didn't wait for Elena to open the door. They threw their small weight against the grand brass door handles, pushing the heavy oak doors open, and charged out onto the snow-covered deck in their socks and fleece pajamas.
Sarah stopped in her tracks thirty feet away. Tears flooded her eyes, blinding her vision as she dropped to her knees in the cold, white snow, opening her arms wide.
"MY BABIES!" Sarah cried out, her voice echoing across the quiet mountain valley.
Juny and Tess flew across the snow like two little birds, throwing their small bodies into their mother’s open arms.
The impact knocked Sarah backward into the soft snow, but she held them with a desperate, fierce, unbreakable love, kissing their cheeks, their dark hair, their small hands, sobbing hysterically as the two little girls wrapped their arms around her neck, burying their faces in her coat.
"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry I left you on that bench..." Sarah wept, holding them tight against her chest. "Mommy is here... Mommy is never leaving you again..."
"We were good, Mommy!" Tess sobbed into her mother’s neck. "We stayed on the bench! We didn't bother anyone!"
"I know, my sweet girls... I know," Sarah cried, holding them close.
Standing twenty feet away in the snow, Callum watched the mother and her daughters holding each other under the brilliant morning sun. His hands were tucked into his coat pockets, his dark face filled with a quiet, profound peace that he had never felt in his entire life.
Gabriel walked up beside him, handing Callum a secure tablet showing the morning news headlines.
SEATTLE TIMES: FIERCE GLOBAL CEO EXPOSES BILLION-DOLLAR CARTEL RING; COO MARCUS THORNE AND JUDGE BRENDA MILLER ARRESTED BY FBI.
"It's completely clean, Callum," Gabriel reported softly. "Federal charges against you have been dismissed with prejudice. The Department of Justice issued a public commendation for your actions in protecting state whistleblowers."
Callum barely glanced at the headline. He didn't care about the news, the company stock, or the praise of federal prosecutors.
He looked at Sarah, who was standing up in the snow, holding Juny in her left arm and Tess in her right, walking slowly toward him.
She stopped two feet in front of Callum. Her dark eyes were filled with an emotion so deep, so absolute, that words seemed completely useless.
"You saved us," Sarah whispered, her voice trembling. "You saved my life... you saved my children's lives. How can I ever repay a debt like that?"
Callum looked down at the two small girls in her arms. Juny reached out, handing Callum her small brass key.
May you like
Callum took the key, smiling gently.
"You don't owe me anything, Sarah," Callum said softly. "You gave me a reason to use my life for something that actually matters."
